New Twetieth Prime and Talking base

Recommended Posts

I was scouting for toys today and found an a$$load of the twentieth with talking base. The voice coming out of the base is a total joke....Seriously. Who the hell did they get to do this thing? Aside from this, the paint apps look odd. The colors are more dull and flat instead of glossy and the blaster is blue.

Does anyone know if this thing still has metal in it? My buddy seemed to think it was all plastic. I disagreed but really with the additional weight of the base I couldn't tell by only holding the box and I don't plan on getting one as I have one of the first runs.

it's supposed to have the same amount of die-cast as the first 20th OP.

also, about the base, your WAY behind the times :-P heres what they said about it at botcon

What about the voice in the sound base for 20th Anniversary Prime? - A local guy [was hired], we wanted Peter but they had just developed a relationship with Sony so we couldn't get the sound clips and they didn't want to go to Peter cause they didn't want it to interfere with his work on the new movie. And because they needed it out in time they opted to just go with the voice they got.

I may be but it's a bit hard to keep up with all the updating of news....plus I have a job and a band.

Really, why didn't they just go with the guy from beastwars A/E/GF? that would have been way better than this crap!

I hope it's still metal. I was thinking of picking one up later just to rip the mask off. Greyskull Optimus Prime!!

jmo, it's easier to keep up with news by using TFormers.com instead of TFans, i like to discuss it here though. honestly, i don't think it would have taken that much time to just get cullen to say a few lines, it's not like theres even an episode worth of lines in the base, just 3 or 4 i think so it wouldn't have taken that much out of his schedual, and the whole thing about sony not being able to give them the clips, jmo, is a cop-out. it doesn't take that long to get permission to use the clips (assuming they even need them), and hell i can download the clips they used in 10 seconds, even so it's not that hard to rip them off the dvd. i think it was just lazyiness on hasbro's part, but i'm not gonna break their balls about it, they've more than made up for it with the upcoming toys.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that they explained this at Botcon. That really is a total BS cop-out. I am and probably always will be glad that I got MP Prime. This DVD Prime is such a joke (esp considering the fact that if someone happened to miss out on Prime the 1st time, they should and probably would if they could, get MP-05).

You guys act like there isn't a ton of legal bullsh*t to deal with in any situation like this... Cullen signs a deal with Sony, that means he doesn't record anything without their approval, or without the money going to them. That's standard practice. And it also creates a big headache for Hasbro if they want to use his voice (Hasbro would have to pay royalties to Sony every time they sold a 20th Prime). And given the deadline I'm sure they faced to get the toy out, it probably wasn't feasible in that time frame, if it were even possible at all.

I'm sure there's a similar situation with using existing audio from TF:TM. Remember that Hasbro doesn't own everything associated with Transformers; the rights to the movie etc. are owned by the copyright holders.

The only time I know of that a Transformer has ever uttered lines from an actual Transformers show is with Air Attack Optimus Primal. But even in that case, the toy didn't come out until Robots in Disguise was airing, and the audio was from the first episode of Beast Machines. Meaning that it was a good two years after the fact before they got the toy out.

So the new 20th Prime is out? When did this happen?

yea, i just copy and pasted from the Q&A part of the Hasbro New Product Unveiling report over @ TFormers.

i underestimated the whole thing with cullen, however, as far as the movie is concerned i'm sure they've planned for the base for a long time so it's not like they couldn't have taken the time to get the liscensing for bits from it, and possibly without having to pay royalties, that is of course assuming hasbro sold/gave the rights to sony as apposed to rhino giving/selling the rights.

They are charging alot for this on uk sites, and it does not even come with the dvd. Garbage.

I picked mine up today and I must admit the voice thing made me a little upset. I was so excited to see It, I grabbed it, took it home, then tried the voice on the base. I buy every transformer that comes out, and I really wanted the stand to put my MP-01 on. I like the colors because it is a unique 20th prime. It is an anime adition, that is my they made the colors the way they are. What I dont understand is, they made this toy is for the collector. Its not like little Johnny is going to say, " Mommy, Mommy, buy me the 90 dollar optimus prime that I will never be able to transform, I can knock my brother out cold with, and it represents a prime that came out before I was born." The original voice is key for the sale of this product given the demographics.

I remember how excited I was when I first saw Anniversary Prime on the shelves. The $70 price tag made me skip it as an impulse buy, but I scooped one up the next day. Its funny how, when we finally see that TF we've been lusting after for months hit the shelves, all common sense goes out the window and turns us into raving fanboys. Thrill of the hunt I guess.

Too bad about the base. I agree with Cuban Pete's assessment of the whole voice debacle. I have no doubt that all the red tape prevented Cullen's voice from being used. As for the wrong color scheme and lack of chrome, I say WTF! In the animated movie, we clearly see a black cannon, a shot of some Decepticons' reflections in Primes shiny chrome grill, and glints of light reflected off Prime's chrome stacks. Last I checked, Hasbro still had intellectual property rights to the likeness of their most recognizable character ever.

I think Hasbro really dropped the ball on this and scrambled to tie-in the DVD release with a boat load of unfinished factory pieces leftover from the Anniversary Prime production run. I don't buy into the hype that Hasbro decided to release a variant just because Anniversary Prime had been previously released. The whole thing was just a bad decision on Hasbro's part in my humble opinion.
