I crossed over to the dark side...

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I have always been a Beast Wars hater. Never liked the toys, totally uninterested in the show. I was happy with my little Optimus Prime obsession, and never had even the slightest desire to pick up a Primal toy at all.

Then, yesterday, I was as Toys R Us. I saw a Titanium Megatron, and lamented the fact that his case companion, WW Prime, was already gone. Lo and behold, I see the BW 10th Optimus Primal sitting there, right next to Megs. I grabbed him, thinking he would make a good Christmas present for my boys, one who loves gorillas, and the other who has expressed an interest in the BW 10th toys before.

So, in the store I look at the box. "Wow" I think. This toy looks pretty awesome, and the robot mode is a rather nice homage to the classic Prime I have always loved. "Maybe we, I mean, they, need to go ahead and open this today..."

I take it to them, they open it, they play with it, and they love it. I got to looking at the toy, and I must say I am impressed. The Optimus Prime vibe is very strong on this guy, what with the very similar head and the "windows" and "grill" in robot mode. He also looks more like a mechanical beast, like the G1 Dinobots, or the Giant Planet toys. I like the toy a lot.

Now, I feel compelled to find other G1 Prime-like Primals! The unthinkable has happened! I actually did a search for Lio Convoy and Big Convoy on Ebay. I hope I find a Classics Prime soon, so I can stop feeling dirty. :P

I never really bothered with any of the cartoons. I stopped collecting at G1 & started collecting again at Alts, so I didn't have much interest in Beast-Formers.....until I bought:

Honestly, the big Primal is one of the best TF's ever. :thumb

I can lement.

Until Optimal Optimus, I never touched many Beast Wars toys.

Its not that I didn't like what I saw, its just screen to toy transitions didnt look too hot for me. Wanted Transmetals but none really showed up where I live.

Armada came, I got Transmetals Cheetor in the remold, the TM Megatron remold and went to Ebay. Friend of mine had a posting for his TM Megatron, I just went to his house and paid him 10$ for it and some CDs. Went back to ebay a few months later and got the TM Optimus.

Then came the 10th Anniversaries. I got all the basics and when they became shelf stockers, I knew the new Megs and Primal weren't coming here so I went through TFCC. I still wanted the original Megs and Primal but wasn't about to shell out for the Japanese two pack, but I found the US version last week.

The original Primal is really great. The 10th Ann edition is really nice, I like how there's even a catch switch in the bicep to stop the swinging gimmick.

I wasn't sure if I ever wanted to get a Primal, then I got the Robot Masters Primal and Lio Convoy, they're both great. Now I'm always looking for any old Primal's and the newer ones, same with the BW Megatron's. They're not that bad at all, not had any luck though since the older ones are hard to find, and afford, and the newer ones don't look like they'll be released here. Also after watching a few DVD episodes of BW, I've grown to like the character of Primal and the BW character of Megs. I should never have passed by the original ape Primal I saw years ago when the shops in my local town used to sell TF's, he was only £10 at the time!

-Mukky, Trukk...so what, they're all good in their own way.

It is actually meant to change the gimmick from mace swinging for bot mode to chest pounding in alt mode. Very ingenious in my opinion. I have always loved that mold, w/ all the firepower, realistic looking alt mode and super-articulated bot. It is definitely one of my all-time favorites.

Primal Prime is probably one of the Primey-est Primals out there...

and I STILL think that OpOp should have had that color scheme (in my little world, that's how Primal looks after having Prime's spark in his chest).

and yeah I'm a recent convert to the original BW Primal. Play value = astronomical

I'm sorry, I can't hear any of you over how awesome Air Attack Primal is.

Amen to that, brother.

Your unhealthy fixation to Optimus Prime is an indciation that you've ALREADY crossed over to the dark side. :D

IMHO, Optimus Primal is a much better character than Optimus Prime. Primal doens't have that big of a self-righteous streak nor arrogance as Optimus Prime. The toy itself is better than Optimus Prime in all cases. The poseability, the look, and the transformation are always more intricate than any version of Optimus Primes out there. Then again, Optimus Primal had more design and engineering experience behind him than Optimus Prime.

In any case, glad to hear that you like Optimus Primal. But do yourself a favor and collect all the Optimus Primals, not just the ones that look like "Optimus Prime" - well, maybe skip out on the Optimus Primal deluxe from BM....
