I've realized the horrible truth about the G1 cartoon.

GIJOE was hilarious enough that my parents actually watched it with my as a kid. Transformers never made a crack about the Decepticons having dental insurance and overall was really not very funny.

You're a silly silly man, Hornet. :)

I moved here from Syria about five years ago to join Hezbollah. It's a little-known fact about me.

:wtf

you move fast

:tflaugh

The G1 cartoon was camp?! zOMG why didnt any1 tell m3?!?!11!11!11!! (/sarcasm)

To be fair, I don't think the G1 cartoon was any campier than any other 80s cartoon series... in fact, compared to a lot of other 80s series, Transformers was pretty good. It sure was a helluva lot better than Challenge of the Gobots. How many times did we tune into Transformers on a Saturday morning, leaving us with a feeling of elation, then we'd tune in to watch Gobots, leaving us with an urge to commit mass homocide. Only to then watch MotU, leaving us with confused sexuality issues. ;p

leave the gay community out of this, it's homicide :)

(used to be in a band Post Office Homicide, and would get so tired of seeing ads for us misspelled)

One interesting thing is that since Disney bought Pixar, John Lasseter has been put in charge of the animation department and wants to bring back 2-D animation.... SCHWING

Pixar has certainly shown us all what can be done with CG animation, but it's only a medium; it can't ever replace hand-drawn animation (which is a different medium). With CG, you lose all spontaneity because every move has to be plotted out in advance. And while that allows for greater precision, it also renders many CG films completely lifeless. The only CG film that I truly love as a CG film is The Incredibles... everything else could have been just as effective (or more) in traditional 2-D animation.

I disagree with your last line.

I just can't imagien toy story as hand drawn, or pretty much any other Pixar film.

now, stuff like Over the Hedge...

Everything started to decline in the 1950's.... again, blame television

by the 1960's WB cartoons were a pale shadow of their former selves :tfsad

although it is interesting to me that the minimalist 60's aesthetic has inspired so much imitation, from Ren & Stimpy to Powerpuff Girls to Spongebob....... etc

John K claimed in his blog that his greatest influences were the '40s cartoons. hell, he point blank said "Buy this book, watch a bunch of '40s shorts and you'll know mroe about animation than any shcool today can teach you" once. the book in question was on the details of '40s animation art or osmethng. I believe it wasa technical examination of the various art styles of the time.

edit: I wouldn't go so far as to call Spongebob minimalistic... it's not the most complecated art, but it's a lot better than say Fairly Oddparents and *Shudders* Xaolin Showdown.

also, the only truly well animated cartoon in the '90s, was, IMO, the first few seasons of Rugrats.

Gargoyles, Batman TAS, Superman TAS disagree with you.

good artdoes not equal good animation.

and besides, Superman: TAS was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too simplified.

i haven't seen gargoyles in so long I forget the animation. >.<

^

What's wrong with simplified. Astounding amounts of detail also doesn't equal good animation. Also I don't this Superman was really animated any different than Batman TAS. Gargoyles IMO borrowed a lot from the look of Batman. I was actually quite surprised Disney was the Distributor since it's different in everyway from anything else they released. Since then the only cartoons in the last 6 years I've actually bothered with watching are Samurai Jack, Teen Titans, and Justice League/Unlimited demn near everything else is crap from what I can tell. Spongebob/CN esque animation aside nothing is worse than the horribly animated 2d CGI shows that are increasingly becoming more popular. Home Movies I partularly hate. Most flash looks better than some of this crap.

Take a closer look at the first seasons of Batman: TAS before it became Gothic Knights and then compare it to Superman: TAS.

There is such a huge Powerglideing difference I didn't recognize it as a kid. As an adult, I see the similiarities, but there aren't many.

Home Movies got better after the first season... the sketchy, ultrarough look was done on purpose, and is found in the previous series' byt the same company(Science Court, which actually used a lot of the voices as Home Movies.). It was an artistic desision, oddly enough. Removing the sketchyness probably made it cheaper, ala the Superman:TAS and since type art.

I watched a bunch of Hanna Barbera cartoons when I was a kid, and I could always tell how they were different from Bugs Bunny etc. in that regard. And I thought it was cheap then too.

My brother and I were the same way growing up.

Besides, few of us watched TFs purely for the animation style. That's what Robotech and that one with the Battleship... ummm... I forgot the name... were for.

BTW did anybody see that HB cartoon in anime style with the cats? It was AWESOME! I have no idea what it was but it was sweeeeeet :tfgrin

Samarai Pizza Cats?

Samarai Pizza Cats?

If it wasn't for it being anime I would've thought Topcat.

Not sure but wasn't Pizza Cats Saban or something.
