I've realized the horrible truth about the G1 cartoon.

Recommended Posts

Ja, Hannah-Barbeara is behind some of the worst animation ever, I think the only compeditors for that positiona are the Shows Minorateam paradies, 12 Oz. Mouse and Squidbillies.

I always thought it was funny that CN used Hanna-Barbera for Powerpuff Girls since they were intentionally going for a retro look...

Dextor was HB too wasn't it?

I think its obvious - that different series cut corners in different ways. Whether it was through stock footage, looped action, or poor miscolorings etc.

and the G1 cartoon was by far the worse offender.

Ah right. :rofl

As stupid as G1 was it for the most part made sense. The only episode I remember watching recently and going Okay, now WTF was that? was Carnage in C Minor. That IMO is the worst offender ever. Everythingelse just plays like a cartoon which is fine because a lot of us wen't yet at an age where the first thing we noticed was OMFG how did prime's trailer get so huge or why are two Starscreams in the shot. :roll

I am so tempted right now to get a season of GIjoe and watch it for argumentive purposes.

Oh and for those of you who see both Flintstones, and Loony Tunes as cheap animation Good God, what are you animation experts. A lot of us wern't even alive in time to grow up watching it when it was fresh, and new. Personally I love said cartoons, and have no problem acknowledging there older cartoons. They never once struck me as cheap. That was the animation style from way back when and in my personal opinion it still looks top notch today for what is, just like I appreciate Superman, Batman or Teen Titans for the animation of today. Okay maybe not so new but I pretty much have stopped watching cartoons as far as newer stuff goes.

Anyone who says that old school Looney Tunes was cheaply animated knows jack shot. Those cartoons are classics in every sense of the word. "Craftsmanship" isn't a word you hear a lot nowadays in cartoon discussion, but it's appropriate when discussing them. They were genuine labors of love. Also keep in mind that this was before the age of television.

On the other hand, the Flintstones aired in the 1960's, on TV, as a weekly show. It was a different era in animation. They didn't show cartoons in movie theaters anymore. To say that Flintstones was cheaply made isn't an insult; it's just a fact. Look at the characters. How many angles do you ever see them from? One, maybe two? And I don't even think that was the point, anyway. The strength of that show was the writing.

Anyway I don't know if there's a point in there, so general FYI and stuff.

What did HB cartoons create. The repeating backdrop or something?

Also, GIjoe and transformers were made by the same animation company, so please STFU. ((not to madhammer))

if you were to compair the overall tone of the G1 cartoon to that of other 1980's cartoons such as GI Joe and He-Man, you'd realize that the G1 cartoon was written to be a comedy cartoon like Loony Toons. while GI Joe and He-Man had semi serious undertones, G1 was meant to be silly and goofy :guh

now that's just crazy talk- being quite the nostalgic fool, i picked up the he-man dvd's - and you know i got the transformers sets. by comparison, i would call he-man on being way less 'mature' than transformers by a long shot-- much more silly. mind you, just by comparison of the 2- it's all good fun and cartoons here overall. btw, the production value on those he-man dvd's are incredible.

IIRC I remember some Tom and Jerrys that had a repeating backdrop. But the real reason HB sucks is becuse most the shows are 2D representations of 2D Characters, unlike everything elese wich has 2D representations of 3D characters.

Seriously, don't f*ck with Looney Tunes. That was ART showed in freaking movie theaters in the '40s.

And as far as Hanna-Barbera is concerned.... *hugs Snagglepuss*

The only thing you can fault HB for is Walligator. In other words Snagglepuss Mk2

Ah, boy. :roll

Maybe you never noticed but every cartoon in the mid 80s was silly and campy as hell. Are you honestly going to argue that shows like GIjoe, and heaven forbid Masters of the Universe were more serious than now. Newsflash for those who yet don't know they were all 30 minute toy advertisments. Each and everyone of them. As for arguing the tone, it was all stereotypical good guys/fighting bad guys for whatever reason. GIjoe did it as American patriots fighting terrorists, Masters of the Universe to my understanding (never actually watched it once) was Heman fighting the forces of evil in a fairytale setting. Transformers was basically GIjoe only with a subtle scifi twist and instead of human characters, transforming robots. The only real difference if anything is some of these comercialtoons were animated better than others.

(Remembers similar ghey thread posted about a year ago) :redface

Also, He-Man had all his animation done for the whole serie at the first episode.

In the '50s, however.... they cheaped out. MGM did the same damn thing. I dunno about Disney, as I can';t remember Disney cartoons from that decade worth a Powerglide.

Everything started to decline in the 1950's.... again, blame television

by the 1960's WB cartoons were a pale shadow of their former selves :tfsad

although it is interesting to me that the minimalist 60's aesthetic has inspired so much imitation, from Ren & Stimpy to Powerpuff Girls to Spongebob....... etc

Unfortunately, this is the way of all Art. As the master painters, composers, and old-world craftsmen impart their knowledge to new generations, their protege must adapt to a new, quicker way of doing things to keep up with the ever growing demands and needs of the world. The times change and everything must adapt to an ever quickening pace. Those who don't, are left in the dust and are forgotten about.

As computer animation has become prevelant in the industry, we are seeing a sort of cartoon renaissance of late. The artists are not limited by the actual production process of an animated project anymore. This is has its ups and downs. On the upside, lots of cool projects are getting made by people that would never have had the resources to do so until now. On the downside however, any corporate animation studio can crank out a plethora of craptastic fluffy drivel at lightspeed.

To quote Bono,

"Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief

All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief "
