I'M SO CONFUSED

look, it'd be a lot easier for everyone if we just acknowledge that this is only an homage to G1 Starscream.... seriously, it would massively cut down on the angst

Can you blame them? I mean, so far, the MP line has been almost perfect G1 cartoon/comic(If you count UM) representations.

And then a very not G1 representation comeso ut.

the MP line has come ot mean for most people to be mostly G1 cartoon/comic accurate, mega articulated toys.

Note, i'm playing devil's advocate here. I haven';t actually seen a good picture of the mold changes and I can't see the picture in the first post.

edit: went through the entire thread.

1. MOLD CHANGES PWN ME UP THE ASS HARDCORE

2. Why the Powerglide is he a cross between Thundercracker and Skywarp?

3. The g1 color accurate release in that japanese club won't really be available ot mostp eople as that club is apparently not international. I.E. you gotta be in japan to sign up. GHEYNESS

honestly, i am kinda peeved that he's not g1 screamer, HOWEVER we've only gotten ONE mp mould.  the mp line being g1 wet dreams has always been speculation.  i wasn't a big part of the fandom when mp1 was released, however, i don't recall ever reading an official statement stating that the mp line was all g1.  now, like i said i am one of the ones peeved that he's not g1 screamer, esp after that teaser with ths02 and the first proto, but as long as there's diecast, the mould still kicks ass and it is a form of starscream, and acceptable form, so i'll bite.  maybe later on down the road if hasbro releases a g1 acurate version (i honestly doubt seeing hasbro release this mould, hopefully they'll proove me wrong) i'll pick it up and sell the takara one.

meh, maybe i'm wrong, but i don't see how you can blam tak/tomy for everybody elses' assumations

I wasn't, really. I was just saying you can't blane the ultra mega GeeWuners for getting pissed off this one time.

99% of the time, yes. They need to STFU, get some Beastbox/dick, and get a life, but this one time, even though I do like the changes a lot(though the color shceme is ghey), I just can't blame them for being pissed off.

and BTW I'm an ultra mega Geewunner (and I do get pussy kthx) and as far as I'm concerned, G1 Starscream is a toy that came out in 1984. This is MP Starscream. Obviously it's an homage to G1 Starscream, but... it's an homage.

and as siburke mentioned, sometimes different is good. Nobody's taking away your G1 Starscream toys; you'll always have them.

Avoiding the usual arguments that make some cry, here's a good reason it's Takara's fault everyone expected a G1 accurate Masterpiece again:

Here's another:

And another:

And another:

Starscream was designed to be G1 accurate, just like people "assumed".

His alt mode was designed to be "passable" as opposed to realistic, just like everyone "assumed".

He delivered everything MP Prime did in terms of design emphais and G1 "slavery", just like everyone "assumed".

And Takara seemed satisfied enough with the result to the point they released all of these images up to and including the prototype, which doesn't usually differ from the finished product all that much (visual effects of colur and material aside).

No, I don't think people assumed, they saw what was right in front of their eyes.

Rather, the changes were implimented after the fact, after it was publically unveiled.

Whatever else they are, they are not what this figure was originally intended to be.

If they were, it would have been in the designs.

Stating that it was supposed to be more G1 than this is not making assumptions and spouting opinion like fact, it is stating that (as the images prove) that it was supposed to be more G1.

Takara changed it at the eleventh hour, shifted the emphaiss from G1 to realsim, and that's their right, it's their toy.

But it's our right to point out what it was supposed to be according to even them, complain that we were mislead, voice our unhappiness with that and make it known we still want Trasnformers (including Starscream) that had the empahsis the Masterpiece line had up until the second version of Starscream.

When I first got Alt. Smokescreen, the first Alt on the market, I thought that it was the Transformer I'd been waitng my whole life for. I'm considering rethinking that with MP-03.  :thumb

That made me think...

I loved my G1 Smokescreen when I was little. I only had 3 TF cars as a kid (Smokescreen, Tracks & Hot Rod) so they were my faves.

A couple of years ago, sitting on the toilet & flicking through the Argos catalogue I saw... ALT SMOKESCREEN!!!

The colours are so unlike the original that I just  couldn't face buying it straight away & starting collecting Transformers again...

YA FKG RLY!!!  :roll

I might as well open myself up to get made fun of... :P

I bought Smokescreen and Sideswipe on sight.  BUT, even from the first preview pics I saw in Toyfare, I never liked Smokes being all blue, I could care less that it's a real rally deco.  Nor was I ever a fan of the Viper mold, and thought it was an odd choice for Sideswipe (the only thing that identified it as Sideswipe to me was the head, and we all know where that's going :redface).  It wasn't until Streak and Hound came out that Alts really got my attention.  So while your reaction is sarcastic, I feel that, if Hastak wanted to, Smokes could have been better.  That's simply my opinion, and I know that some people feel otherwise.  That's fine.

Now [ontopic], I'm going to try to sum up this whole coloring issue.  I'm not going to mention that the deco posted is hideous... okay, well not after this anyway. :lol  I'm not going to argue proto mold 1 vs proto mold 2 or what the definition of "masterpiece" is.  To this discussion it's irrelevant.  Okay:

One, I think everyone agrees that MP03 is, at the very least, heavily influenced by the G1 seeker jet design.  Two, that the reason the name Starscream was chosen for the mold is obvious: he was the most popular seeker (not to mention one of the most popular characters in TF, period).  So what we have so far is a G1-influenced design coupled with a character whose immense popularity dates back to G1.  We're all together so far, right?  Now, when we say "seekers" or "G1 Decepticon jets," notice the plural.  Originally, there were 3, and they were all shaped exactly the same.  The only thing that set them apart from one another was their color deco.  While the cartoon/comic was obviously able to add differentiation in the form of characterization, the toys could only rely on visual cues.  As such, the seekers (and the Lambos, Datsuns (waves to Smokescreen above), cassettes (RIBFIR :lol), etc.) came to be recognized just as much for their appearance as their characters.  Example:  still frame of the cartoon, all 3 seekers on screen.  One of them is blue, two of them are light gray:  who are they?  Thundercracker, Starscream, and... Starscream?!?!? :eek  Example 2: describe the personality differences (NOT their gimmicks) between Thundercracker and Skywarp without googling.  Some of you know, most don't.  TC was blue and SW was black, and for most fans, it didn't go much further than that.  The color of the jet was very important in differentiating the seekers.

Fast forward to present day.  We have a planned super-duper-deluxe version of an all-time favorite character, who has been reincarnated in many forms over many toy lines.  This version happens to draw heavily on his G1 physical form.  Given the defining nature of the G1 color scheme, it would only seem natural to bring it forward.  This would solidify the heretofore unidentifiable toy into the representation of the character they claim it to be.  Instead, the oddly-colored image in this thread depicts a deco previously unseen on a G1 seeker-style frame.  While there is nothing wrong with that in and of itself, as the toy is still impressive irrespective of the colors used, there is nothing to identify it as Starscream except the name on the box rumor on the internet.  Again, stressing the importance of coloring on the seekers, the fuzzy, sloppily-Photoshopped picture that generated all of this talk is not Masterpiece Starscream, but Masterpiece Generic Nameless Seeker.

The name on the box doesn't mean much if someone can already identify what's inside. Takara could make a perfectly show-accurate G1 Starscream, market it as Slobknob Bob, and people would still call it Starscream.  In this case, people can identify the shape of the toy (which is almost totally G1), but can't match a name to the color (which is almost totally WTF).  Since the overall design had its colors matched to characters years ago, there is no more reason to think that this is Starscream any more than it is Thundercracker or Skywarp, or even Sunstorm.  They all shared a design, and were differentiated by color.  The colors in question do not identify any of them.

As I said before, this doesn't take away from the toy itself.  But it does, for some people, take away the desire to make the purchase, especially considering the possibility of getting what they want at a later date.  For those that like what's been displayed, that's great.  Enjoy what is almost guaranteed to be an excellent toy.  For those that are unhappy with the colors, you are completely justified in your feelings.  When that repaint comes out, enjoy what is almost guaranteed to be an excellent toy as well as an accurate representation of the iconic character whose name is on the box. :thumb

Finally, for those that are singing the praises of the "realistic" MP03 displayed here:

1. Please explain to me how the colors used are even remotely realistic.

2. Please explain how unrealistic colors are a disappointment when sentient robots that change into vehicles are billions of times less realistic. pwned.gif by selective suspension of disbelief :rofl

edit: Oh crap, all of these words are right after a joshlowe post... the combined wordiness is going to make everyone completely miss the point. :tflaugh

IMO we're being spoiled lately...

It looks to me like there's something to please almost everyone. I don't think I've seen seen the new colours for MP Starscream (Is this it?) and to be honest, I'm 99.99% sure I'll grow to love it. Even if it is a bit different from what I'm expecting.

Everyone has a right to their opinion on this. A forum without different opinions would be pretty boring methinks! That said though, TFs have been going strong for 20+ years so I reckon HasTak have good reasons for releasing things the way they do.

Me personally, I'm sure I'll like it.  I'll snap one up on eBay the second I see one for the right price. If one of you fanboys keen collectors has preordered one & you don't like the colour when it arrives, shoot me a PM and I may take it off your hands!

I'm hoping they release a realistic looking MP Megs as a tank. I myself can't see a gun working well & I love G1 Megs! Do I want a green & purple camo paint-job? Hell no! I've never seen anything like that IRL and I've seen plenty in my time. (Well, Belgium's DPM is pretty garish... great if you wanna set up a sniper point in a bag of Skittles!) I'd like to see him in silver/gunmetal grey/urban camo or something like that with slight red & black highlights in robot mode as a nod to G1, or in green with purple & grey bits in robot mode as a nod to his G2 colours. But what if he's released in desert-camo colours!? I'll get over it!

Like my Smokescreen comparisons show, change isn't always a bad thing. I would've loved a G1 paint-job on Alt Smokey, but I'm 101% pleased with the Scooby colours. The Alternators are amazing pieces of engineering, I'd even go as far as saying they're works of art. I pay more than most US citizens for mine (around $50-$60 each) thanks to being in the UK but, after comparing them to any other Transformer in the same (UK) price-range I think they're worth every penny. I can't wait to see the finished MP Starscream and I'm pretty sure it will impress me regardless of what they change. If I don't like the look of it, I'll just not buy it. Or sell it if I've already bought it. I'll give my views on it after I have one in-hand!

JMO  :thumb

i used to hate the changes but now they've grown on me(even the new paint job). even if he doesn't qualify as an MP, he could still be classified as a high-end Binaltech and that's good enough for me :thumb

you're right... maybe I should put KTHX at the end to validate them. :tftongue
