In terms of respect to the original, paying tribute to the aspects that made him what he was, the first is better.

I'm not saying it's the better figure, but in celebrating, honouring aspects of the original that the second mold snubs it's nose at, it is a more fitting tribute, a truer homage.

 

That's what is at the centre of all of this.

 

It's not a bunch of people looking at a figure and comparing it to high expectations no one could ever possibly match, it's them looking it MP03 v2 and comparing it to the first version, the version they originally bought into.

 

We were given two Starscreams with very different qualities; one the ultimate G1 fanwank, the other the ultimate realism fanwank.

There's a market for both, and by choosing not to deliver to both, by choosing to replace one with the other, they have alienated and annoyed one of those markets, opened themselves up to the comparisons and the crticism.

 

I mean do you really think anyone would waste their time moaning about this is they were still getting the MP G1 Starscream they were shown and sold on originally?

I also think that a lot of angst is because the fandom doesn't feel like TAKOMY really cares about them anymore...and I'm not just talking about the changes to MP-03, but also the cancellation of the Galaxy Force line, the nonexistence of the TFC line, the disappearance of the official Binaltech line, and it's repalcement KISSPEDOPHILE line...it's just really gone downhill...and now, "If you want your precious GEEWUN flavored Starscream, you will have to give us more money :eplus :mwahaha "

It's a Japanese club, I have my doubts that it'll cater to people outside of Japan. Unlike Hasbro which does stuff world wide, Takara Tomy really only handles Transformers in Japan and a few other smaller countries. And then Hasbro's club isn't their own, it's a 3rd party official club so where they ship to has nothing to do with Hasbro. If Hasbro isn't willing to ship products to Japan (or the UK for that matter) from their store, then I doubt Takara Tomy will ship to the US from their club.

 

So yes, unless Hasbro gives us a toon version (which I doubt), then we are forced to get the "real-world" version or nothing at all (unless you're willing to pay double the price to Japanese scalpers that are only joining the club to resell).

Well, there's a reason they're getting bought out, ya know.... selling expensive stuff to a small market is kinda tricky

 

That aside, Hasbro has been MORE than picking up the slack IMO. Not that I have any issues with either version of MP Starscream, no matter the color scheme.

And Hasbro has been kicking major ass lately (aside from this whole ONLINENEMESISPRIME debacle) - I have a feeling we'll see MP-03 over her in some form or another.

 

Oh and FWIW Classics Starscream looks better and better every time I see a new pic.

You guys really should've seen something like this coming with the merger but I suppose foresight isn't our fandom's greatest strength.  I would not be surprised if Tomy wrecked this like they wrecked Binaltech, dropping the die-cast and upping the premium another $10 or $20.  It actually hurts to think we might have to rely on Hasbro to right this wrong.  Cue the ignorant remarks from the I-blindly-love-everything-because-critical-thinking-escapes-me-and-besides-your-opinion-is-not-fact-but-mine-is crowd...

It's not just that they showed us protos.  It all started with THS-02, when they basically put an ad inside the box saying "this is what MP-03 is going to look like!" and then, after selling us on one product, switched it to something else entirely.  I think that if it had not been for that ad I wouldn't be half as vexed right now.
