Review - Alternators Optimus Prime

oh geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez :roll

ZOMG WHAT A RIPOFF AT $20

BTW I remember when people called Alt Prowl a "spychanger"... quite the insightful observation (they both have flip hoods!! :eek). And BTW I see a lot more positive than negative comments about Prowl nowadays...

If we look back at G1, there's a handful of base transformations.

And many Transformers now are variations on those basics.

Alt prime and Prowl are based on the Sideswipe style of transformation (the basic spy changer type).

That transformation was never one of the most creative, it isn't the best base transformation to work from, and, perhaps most importantly, there seems to be no middle ground.

It either works really well, looks proportionate, like Sideswipe or Hot Rod (in their day) or it looks chunky and bizarre; huge chest, wimpy arms, block legs, like a spy changer, so it is an accurate observation.

And yes, many have warmed to Prowl, but a significant factor in that is the leg mod, which changes the whole appearance of the figure and pushes it towards the Sideswipe/Hot Rod side of the style.

And $20 for crap is a rip off, moreso when you live in the UK and the price is closer to $40.

It's not like I expect a masterpiece figure for that price, but I do expect something that lives up to the standards they set with the other figures in the line that sell for the same price.

That is not too much to expect.

Or at least it shouldn't be.

FWIW I think Prowl's leg mod makes him look stupid.

I guess my problem is people calling any Alternator "crap". It just shows you how blasé we've become. They've produced a Transformer that has awesome articulation and turns into a completely dead-on 1:24 scale Dodge Ram. There was a time when the fandom would have been squealing over such a toy. Those days are gone, apparently.

Articulation and wonderful alt mode aren't everything. an alt has no real gimmicks and Blot, so it has to rely on the third of the three consistant things you need for a good TF, and that's a good looking robot mode.

in that, alt prime fails more so than any TF releasedi n the past 12 months. I am dead serious, he's the ugliest TF since Energon.

He just doesn't look any fun too. a lot of the fun I get out of a toy is putting him in weird ass poses that are physically impossible, and it looks like he doesn't have the ability to do that.

edit: again, the reason I tend ot react this way towards an alt is because they cost a lot of money.

YES 20 IS A LOT OF MONEY

if I'm paying that much or more, i expect something to immedately grab me and go WOW, this is good enough to be one of your three christmas presents or sometihng.

I literally cannot see what you're talking about. I mean... I really don't get it.

I don't look at that thing and immediately think "wow that's hideously ugly". It's not my favorite Transformer of all time, but neither does it look (to me) nearly as awful as you guys are saying. I'm really not seeing it.

and no I'm not asking for a complete list of his flaws

My first, immedate reaction when I saw him for the first time was :guh

I have a feeling i'm not the only one.

the only decent looking parts on him are his legs and headsculpt. Now I dunno why people Starscream aobut his head. It's a new take on Prime, but unlike the rest fo the new take on Prime, it's not ghey.

Not always. My first impression of alt Prowl was :guh, and yet I want one fairly bad now.

I was just getting all psychological on you. :tfgrin

and to be clear, I'm not gonna be getting this guy or anything. I don't think there's a need for an Alternators Optimus Prime. Although I must admit that calling him "Ginrai" makes him 100x cooler to me... it just seems to fit better somehow.

It IS a better fit, but it doesn't change the fact that he would blow anyway.

I think you can sum up most of the reaction against him in three ways:

1. People come ot expect non-ugly looking TFs with stupid looking transformations in the alt line.

2. He was shown at the same tiem as Alt Mirage. and if you compare the two....

3. The immedate :guh reaction.

His head look highly simular. Any hoo, what was your 10,000th post *if you were paying attention :redface *

This.

He spent his 10,000th post mocking a total moron. If I last logn enough in TFans to have a ten thousandth post, I hope my post is also mockign a total moron.
