The G1 Comics explains it. The G1 cartoon does not.

Conclusion: Comic continuity is teh cool. Cartoon continuity is teh suck. :P

Better conclusion:

Both have no real 'continuity' that's internally consistant, so just sit back and enjoy the cheesiness. And make up stuff to fill the gaps if you think it's fun. :D

When I first saw the new characters I didn't really pay much attention as to where they came from, I was mostly, "cool new characters" and stuff.

indeed

I've never heard the "stuck in the Ark" explanation before but it makes sense to me.

Prime: "Hey, Cosmos, Powerglide, Warpath, Seaspray, Hoist, Grapple... why don't you guys go uh, check out the engine room or something for a minute" *locks door*

You remember the episode where Perceptor, Beachcomber and some one else introduced themselves to Chip Chase?

G1's Toon made me mad even as a 7 yr old kid. I realized it was a Cartoon and any thing can happen but I was a little upset that certain things were never explained.

Back when I was younger I used to just yell out, "That's Phoney!! How can Astrotrain hold the whole decepticon army inside himself?! How can Megatron ride inside Thrust (when he brought Kremzeek to the ARK). WAIT A MINUTE!! Laserbeak blasted Prime directly in his opened chest, the Cons made a perfect copy of him before inside and out, Where the hell did the Matrix come from?!" All that vagueness and no backstory is why we get hundreds of threads like this every year.

They're contracts with Diaclone weren't up yet.   :tflaugh

:tflaugh it's true. I think it just depends on whether or not we were the kind of person to notice and be bothered by details like that. I was 13 when I started watching the show, and yeah it bugged me a bit that they never said anything about where the new guys came from, but it didn't drive me crazy. The only thing that really bugged me (even though I know why it was this way) is how they made a big deal about introducing the post-Constructicon gestalts in season 2, and then in TF:TM there's no sign of them, and everyone's still crapping their pants over Devastator. Where's Omega Supreme? Where's anyone else? Like I said, I know that they started working on the movie before those guys were even out, but it still annoyed me.

I'm sure the writers at the time also didn't think we'd be discussing it 20 years on.

Also having revolving writer teams prolly didn't help much either.

But I'm just thinking.... with however many episodes they had per season, and considering how they made the introduction of the Stunticons/Aerialbots into a big two-parter (shoot, they gave a two-parter to the Combaticons alone).... could they not have written an episode about the 1985 guys' origins? Origin stories are always fun and easy to write anyway. I don't think any of us would have missed "Child's Play"...
