Why do humans never get killed in TFs?

Recommended Posts

To call anything that happens in a kids' show "war" (or to imply that it should reflect the reality of war in some way) is kind of missing the point of kids' programming. Of course it's not going to be realistic; it shouldn't be. It's an onscreen representation of imaginary play.

I disagree.

As kids we watched war movies and people died, we saw over the top moralising about soldiers not wanting to kill but ultimately being given no choice.

Many of our kid's shows were the same, they portrayed war and death and responsibility.

They didn't talk down to us and avoid "awkward" concepts, they didn't replace bullets with lasers, or people with drones, they didn't give us shows where everyone laughed at the end of the episode and everything was alright, where nothing had any lasting effect.

The way we played reflected that.

Our imaginary play didn't suffer from the realism of what we watched, it didn't limit us, it gave us more possibilities, and moral teachings in a way I suppose, too.

When some British fans say, as I have, that they found the G1 TF show to be condescending and childish to them even at the age of 9, that's not some kind of arrogance or claim we were smarter than American kids.

We were just lucky enough to grow up in a country where those who were repsonsible for programming realised that there was a place for that kind of realism, that the fact that we were kids didn't mean we had to be shown a rose coloured world where nothing is real.

They realised that the kind of thing you say shouldn't be, was beneficial to us, from both and educational and fun point of view.

Even if I did have kids, I wouldn't be trying to dumb them down, I would let them see the news so that they can see, a somewhat filtered, view of the world around them.  Violence is everywhere in life, better to learn of it early instead of being shocked when you're older.

It's a pity that having Prime die has become pretty common in the TF cartoons now, once is fine enough, but it was a bad idea to bring him back since now he dies and then comes back.  How can that be good for kids?  What if they kill their pet or brother or sister to see if they'll come back from the dead?  Kids learn from example after all.

The reason TV is so PC now is because of people like you.  Both of these posts are about the morals and life lessons kids learn from TV, but KIDS SHOULDN'T BE LEARNING LIFE LESSONS FROM CARTOONS.  TV is for entertainment, parents are for teaching consequences and other life lessons.

One thing i have always had a problem with - thinking of TF and GiJoe specifically - is that you show this WAR and then there is violence - and yet there are no consequences to these violent actions.

Look around you - i think thats a major problem - not just with violence - but wtih many things (teen pregnancy for example).

Kids/People dont have a firm graps of cause snd effect.

I don't think TV should be what teaches kids about cause and effect.  Parents should.  Hell, time away from the TV will teach them cause and effect.

I want the next series to be gory. Severed heads/arms/legs, gutsploding action.

Why?  Honestly gore never really adds anything to the story, most of the times its used in movies to distract from bad stroy telling.  Hmmm, actually maybe it would have helped Energon.

nothing would have helped energon...except maybe if kicker got blown up or something...so i guess your right

and im betting we would have all loved for the kids in armada to take the bloody way out

Children learn from all sources they are exposed to. Who knows what will end up sticking in their brains. To say that kids shouldn't be learning from television is like saying that kids' brains should automatically shut down when parents think it's appropriate. Parents are directly repsonsible for what their kids see and hear and learn (at home at least). And yes, one of TV's purposes is as a meduim for entertainment. But purveyors of entertainment don't keep too close an eye on the praiseworthiness of what they dish out. Awards are given out for style, not content.

:wtf

Nope, I'm just me.

Unless of course you meant he made a similar point, in which case it's possible, as I've met more than a few people who  saw it similarly.

Sorry, it was a joke.  :redface  Kopibot spazzed out recently claiming how nobody remembers his posts - this seemed like a similar case.

Jesus this is a long ass topic.

ok, I didnt read more than two pages but if i copyed somebody, i dont care. Even as a kid I thought there was somethig missing in the cartoons and realized something when I picked up a Generation 2 comic at the age of nine and saw the horrors that the Pretenders did to that city(so much destruction) The cartoon did a horrible job in portraying that needed emotion that a war themed series that it was. Even GI. Joe at some points made me go nuts just seeing them fight like every episode of the A-Team(Lots of explosions and nothing to show for it). I know damn well that it was portrayed for kids and there were violent cartoon around( few as they were). Maybe the Japanese got it right by putting extremely violent cartoon on T.V. You dont see riots, gang warfare, or suicide bombers, cause all that violence of cause and effect are kept within the idiot box.
