J.A.F.O.'s Collection

Recommended Posts

Wow, pretty impressive and well taken care of vintages for a non-collector. I am amazed by the condition of your Jetfire, it looks like you just bought it today from a store! Your loose ones look great as well. I wished my old G1 stuff looked as neat as those. Welcome!

Hopefully your continued presence will finally make you turn to the dark side and finally buy one. I started with Unicron, and I couldn't stop. Transformers are plastic crack for me :D

Thanks for the comments all.  Don't believe the pictures...they're DECEPTIVE in that most of the figures in the group shot are suffering from yellowing/fading, loose joints and other symptoms that wouldn't make them all that valuable.  The exceptions are the "movie" Prime mint in the styrofoam and Jetfire, although the box is really in less-than-stellar condition.

Less than meets the eye! :D

:wave  Welcome to TFans J.A.F.O. (as in Blue Thunder's J.A.F.O. ?)

A very sensible and well thought out first post. :thumb

I don't agree with you of course :roll  I still buy TF's and think some of the stuff made today is better than the original (well, at least the BT/ALT are better than the diaclone inspired TF's IMO)

Sorry I disagree, I believe that the G1 transformer toys were and are still the best T-Formers toy lines.  :Dc

Although the G1 Transformers were very well made in the context of their era, by recent and contemporary standards, they are woefully inferior.

First of all, your typical G1 TF had very limited articulation in robot mode. Robot mode poseability was generally limited to whatever joints needed to move for transformation. It wasn't until late G2 that Transformers started becoming fully articulated action figures in their robot modes - something which was further enhanced in Beast Wars and then carried over into Car Robot, which itself evolved into Binaltech/ALT.

Secondly, the amount of detail put into sculpts is far superior in contemporary TFs compared to those in G1. In fact, G1 cheated by using stickers to help flesh out details in their toys. TFs from Beast Wars onwards did not do this - they actually relied on their basic sculpts to carry the details. A lot of Beast Wars figures featured exquisite attention to detail in their sculpts, especially with furs, feathers, muscle fibres etc. The Transmetals saw the same level of detail being applied with mechanical components such as conduits, grills, vents, pipes, hatches etc. There was no detailling that relied on stickers. Beast Wars also saw the advent of airbrushed paint apps, allowing colours to blend into each other. Some of the Transmetals are early examples of this - a more recent example would be Flame Convoy/CYB Scourge. Furthermore, all faction symbols are now heat-stamped or actually hard-sculpted into the toy. Doesn't matter which you prefer, either method means that faction symbols aren't going to fade out or fall off like stickers. There have also been advances in the types of paints used, such as metallic paints and also more durable chip-resistant paints for die-cast metal components (as used in BT-02 onward).

Thirdly, contemporary Transformers have a higher proportion of self-contained accessories. G1 Transformers often had accessories that needed to be set aside in another mode - accessories that could be lost. A lot of the early G1 TFs were particularly bad in this aspect. Fists, missiles, launchers, guns, gestalt parts etc... all easily lost. These days, weapons all have some form of containment in the Transformer's alt mode, whether it becomes part of the alt mode (e.g.: engine, muffler) or if there is a storage compartment (e.g.: Hound and Swindle's spare tyre).

And finally, contemporary Transformers are generally far more durable than G1 Transformers. I remember having a similar conversation in the late 90s... I was holding a Maximal toy in my hand and to prove this point, I threw the toy against a table top. The toy bounced, and skidded off the ground. I picked it up, blew the dirt off it and said, "See? If I did this with a G1 Transformer, it would have broken." I'm not saying that contemporary TFs are indestructible, but they are far more durable than G1 TFs, some of which you would handle with care as soon as you opened them in fear of breaking them.

IMHO, contemporary TFs are better to look at and more fun to play with.

You will if you're seeing everything in nostalgia's eyes.

Just because you play with your TFs a lot, doesn't mean you have to break them.

That's one thing that used to really piss me off as a kid - I almost never broke any of my Transformers - although I played with them a lot, I always treated them with love and respect. Other kids on the other hand, were constantly breaking not only their own TFs, but MINE as well!! Most of my broken G1 TFs were broken by other kids who played with my toys!

"So stop sharing your toys," I hear some of you say. Yeah, I tried that, but then the other kids would go tell my mum, and she'd make me share my toys.

GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! If any of you here were kids that frequently broke their toys, allow me to say I HATE YOU!!

:demon

as you were...

ALL the tf I had whan I was a child were broken by my little cousin, who just dropped them thru my apartment window. I lost about 30 transformers, some of them very very very rare nowadays.
