What's everyone see in BW?

Recommended Posts

You guys are WAY to harsh on Beast Wars figures.  They were some of the best molds since G1.  Seriously, there has never been a toy as good as Transmetal 2 Megatron before OR after Beast Wars.  Not only did he look good, but his transformation was complex and he had great articulation.

And then there's the show.  Not only is Beast Wars the best TF cartoon, it's one of the best science fiction series out there.  Even people that don't like Transformers get into Beast Wars.  There was a lot of great writing in that show, and the voice acting was great.

Some Beast Wars figures were lackluster, but there were also lackluster G1 figures, RiD figures, and Armada/Energon/Cybertron figures.  The fact of the matter is, that the majority of the line rocked.

And people that say they don't like BW figures just because they're animals doesn't cut it either.  Do you not like G1 Ravage because he's a cassette and not a car, or Megatron becaues he's not a car?

You can't form an opinion of a line by playing with a few figures and saying they're lackluster.  That's like playing with the Pretenders and saying G1 was awful.  You have to get a nice variety of them and truly experience the line.

Now I'm just rambling.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I still believe BW is the best thing to ever happen to Transformers.

Exactly, everyone is entitled to there own opinion.  Im not saying BW wasnt a great show, it very well may be, I myself never really had a chance to watch it, but from the figures, I've never seen one that I wanted to buy, not one, and I've boughten figures from Armada, Energon, Cybertron and I know those shows werent anything special.  I just prefer the G1 stuff or similarly themed stuff, just my personal opinion and I think the show was great, lets not forget that its what started everything and its what most people, even the casual fans think of when you say transformers, not some ape or dinosaur, a truck and a gun.

Totally valid points there.  There are the not-so-great G1/RiD/Armada/Energon/Cybertron toys too.  But I suppose, from a personal point of view, I've liked (for example) Cybertron figures as a whole in general, more than BW ones.  Even in the newer series, I'm not too impressed by the beast-TFs anyways (most GF Animatros TFs come to mind).  So it's not just BW that doesn't do it for me...

(on a side note, I've always found the comment about G1 Ravage being an animal transfomer an interesting one.  I've always seen it this way:  Using, say, BW Cheetor as an example:

Cheetor: Bot mode=robot, Alt mode=cheetah (animal)

G1 Ravage: Bot mode=panther (animal), Alt mode=cassette.

So they're not in the same boat, by my definitions, although others might see it differently.  :P)

G1 Megatron was always cool, but I suppose what I was trying to say was that I liked car or plane transfomers more than animals.  Not to say that specific beast-TFs weren't great, because there are great beast-TFs (in BW, or in other series); but as a whole, the figure-design didn't touch me as much as some of the other lines.

I totally agree with you on that.  I've never felt the need to buy any BW figure on impulse, but I'll buy random Superlink/GF figures just because they looked cool (by my books)...

Maybe I need to go watch some BW now...  Gotta get my hands on the episodes...

But at that same time for younger audiences it's what they know, Beast Wars is what got me into Transformers I then got the original TF: Movie and started to get into more G1, and I also play YGO/Vs. so like a lot of ppl that I play with grew up on G1. when I mention BW around them they ridiculed me and said they would never watch a show where OP was monkey, and make jokes about flinging poop. I in no way look down on G1  because it started it all, but may I ask you, what kind of episode do you have when Powerglide beats up on Thrust, Dirge, and Ramjet?  Beast Wars has waaayy too many unforgettable moments, and waayyyy too many unforgettable toys, of course they had there duds cough*retrax*cough and then they had there gems. My point is BW set precedents, the death of Dinobot in "Code of Hero" was far more compelling than the death of Optimus Prime in "TF:TM". Beast Megatron would kick the original Megatron's ass. There is not one character in Beast Wars where I can't qoute atleast a dozen of thier lines, that's the impact the CHARACTER had opposed to the flat, stale characters in G1, that is all.

There were very few stale charachters in G1, most of them were unique with a personality.  If G1 was so unappealing, why did BW have to copy several of there names?

One of G1's problems was there were simply too many characters - to the point that they began recycling them, e.g. Sunstreaker and Tracks were essentially the same character.

If G1 was so unappealing, why did BW have to copy several of there names?

Hasbro's just lazy.

Actually i think they copy the names for the same reason they are still copying the names....

Trademarks!

(which always got me - how did they keep O-Prime - technically Primal is a different word...must be all those reissues etc.)

Since we have all seen examples of BAD BW bots - and assuming that RobotRollcall genuinely wants to see the good stuff in BW - i present my fave figure from BW so far:
