knock offs can be considered in 2 schools:

1) any use of a mold not under the main line. Your 2-ups and crystal cassettes are examples of this.

2) anything trying to cash in on a popular trend or line. These are also called rip-offs or spin-offs (this would be where your Roadbots fit in). Go Bots and Convertors also fit under this area.

Gobots came first.  Which would technically make Transformers the KOs.

You'll come to learn that I take syntax way too seriously...

Eh? Says who? Gobots didn't hit until 1984, Machine Robo didn't hit Japan until 1982. Transformers also came out in 1984, but can trace its roots like Diaclone (1980 toy line, TF used 1982 toy molds) or Microman/MicroChange (1974 toy line, early 80s molds used in TF). The US release dates are the same year so the difference in release is pretty minor, but TF can trace it's molds back as far or even further than Gobots can.

"Spin-offs" are created officially, and related to the main product. As such, Beast Wars is a spin-off of Transformers.

AFAIK, their quality is just as good as any mainline tf and they're not really based on any Alternator molds other than transforming into the same model of car. is any transforming toy that's not produced by Hasbro/TakTom considered a knock-off?

What a useless post. Hornet, you well knew that this topic has been discussed over and over on various TF boards.

Not useless.

Not everyone posts at various other TF boards and we've had an influx of new members lately, so this way he gets opinions from new and TFans exclusive members. :)

I don't consider them knock offs.

They're just transforming robots from another line by another company.

HasTak don't have exclusive ownereship of the transforming concept.

Also similarities in transfomation are inevitable, and some Transformers have actually mimicked other lines, which would make TF's knock offs too, if these are.

Personally, I'd say anything that uses misleading, even copyrighted imagery without claiming to be a Transformer is a knock off.

Pics?

i need one of those happy wells jetfires
