the tf fandom is bitterly divided

I guess what I'm getting at is that there has been no cartoon since the original. There have been different toy lines released, but Hasbro keeps returning to the 3 3/4" figures in different incarnations. They must be selling, otherwise Hasbro wouldn't keep bringing them back. A buddy of mine is a big GI Joe collector and has been going to their conventions for the past 10 years. He sees younger kids there, but most of them look like they're the children of older collectors.

It just doesn't strike me as a "big" brand, though. At least that's the conclusion I've come to based on my own very unscientific surveys (watching what kids gravitate towards at Target or TRU or wherever), as well as shelf space / prominence given to various toys.

At any rate, if that indeed is the way the GI Joe franchise is going, I don't see much happening with it in the future. We get stuff like Alternators b/c kids buy enough of the regular stuff to make it worthwhile for Hasbro to put out fan-centric stuff.

When you talked about viability, I was assuming you meant survival. GI Joe has certainly done that, even if at a smaller scale than TFs at this point in time.

It certainly has become that, but only because the brand has retained older fans. The future viability of the TF brand is dependent upon attracting *new* fans........... i.e. kids (which we all were once).

I wouldn't say that the TF brand is dependent on attracting new fans (although that doesn't hurt...). GI Joe is still alive and kicking without any real attempt to attract new, younger fans.

They are now. In the last year GI Joe has been suffering, that is why we now have Sigma Six.

Yeah I did, but I guess I was also thinking about the brand bringing in enough money to not only self-perpetuate, but to allow for new / creative stuff. I'm sure that GI Joe fans would love to see the GI Joe version of something like Alternators (whatever that would look like).

Marvel Legend type figures? Atleast that's what I want.

I'd probably buy a Marvel Legends-type Cobra Commander and/or Destro.

And sell it a couple of weeks later?

GI Joe just isn't unique anymore. these days, the market is statchurated with toylines that consist mostly of human or human-like characters. tf's main concept of robots that turn into vehicles/animals is still unique and has never been successfully duplicated.

personally, i think making GI Joe actionfigures bigger would have helped but 12 inches is too big, Hasbro should have settled for 5 or 7.

*reminds Hornet that GI Joe figures originally were 12"*
