This is all kind of pointless anyway because these characters were written to be as you describe them. Hot Rod was written to be heroic (hence him confronting Galvatron) because he was going to be the next leader. Ultra Magnus was written to be a good guy, but not truly leader material, because he wasn't going to be the next leader, but they still wanted the kids to like him. And so on.

They castrated Grimlock for the movie and season 3.  They made him into a big fat retard instead of the bad-ass Conan-type warrior he should have been.  And I don't mind Roddy, but I agree his alt-mode sucks.  The jet truck for Energon is way cooler.  Wish they'd design a larger, maybe Voyager or Ultra sized version for the next incarnation of TF.

you know though roddy gets alot of love to be hated and written off in the show, there's his energon homage, and then hot shot who is a charater homage of him

Actually I thought E Rodimus' alt mode was perfect -- a racing semi. Makes sense, doesn't it? I mean, you combine a truck with a race car and there you go! (And BTW those *are* real vehicles. Scary looking, but real.) The robot mode didn't live up to the character, however. But hey, it was a deluxe with a powerlinxing gimmick.

:pfx  E. Rodimus' alt mode rawked! I'd like to see an Alternator version!

Good to see I'm not the only one yearning for adult character development and conflict whilst rewatching my favorite childhood cartoon.

i loved the hot rod toy, both modes. i loved rodimus both modes. as a child growing up with transformers you grow accustom to the fact that some parts on your tfs just dont move. i never cared about it.

 

as for their tv personas, is another story. is it safe to say hotrod was awsome in the movie? i dont recall him whining in the movie at all. he took charge, ran in head first and kicked ass. if only they continued that mentality into season three. now i do agree that in season three things did go a little topsy-tervy. and he was pretty whiney. but there was character developement. but it was overshadowed by his whininess and his responsibility. the way i saw it, he thought eveything that could ever happen, was his fault and he just had to find a way to stop it. after whining about it first of coarse. he must have developed the robot equivelent of an ulcer(dont know if i spelled that right).

 

best leader imo? bw primal. he had the same learning experience as rodimus, didnt whine about it, and in the end became the great leader that prime was. what stands out in my memory, is him dealing with rattrap in the first episode and saving cheetor. i guess we saw prime finished with his "learning" to be leader because he dealt with megatron for a few million years already.

 

also, i loved the energon rodimus toy both modes. sure he couldve been a lil better, but what can you do. other than Starscream on this forum about it i mean. i was satisfied.
