New TF movie - maybe not going to be "original"?

Recommended Posts

I included Hulk in that list b/c it tried to be something great and wasn't the work of a hack.

Ultimately, I don't think it worked, but at least it wasn't cheesy, obnoxious sh*t.

I actually liked Hulk.  It started off way too slow, but was well done, IMO.  (The original TV show was slow as well, and worked great.)  I especially liked the fresh editing approach, which had a strong comic cook feel to it. :thumb

Maybe I'm wrong about it.  I saw it once in the theater opening week.  I suppose I could rent it again...

I disliked Hulk precisely because of the editing style.  When they showed the helicopter carrying Hulk from five different angles at once... that's when they lost me.  By the time they drew a line around the exploding dude they had me laughing out loud.

I don't want to get anything started, but I have a lot of respect for cinema, and I don't think it matters is a movie is "cheesy" or a "B" movie or what it is, plagiarism is stealing, and it's never okay to steal someone else's hard-thought ideas, regardless of their quality.  It's as much an offense to steal trash as it is to steal genius, in my opinion.

I haven't seen The Island, nor do I intend to, but I have seen Clonus, and if the number of similarities cited in the article at the beginning of this thread are accurate then I'm inclined to say it's more than any mere coincidence.  Obviously the screenwriter is at fault, but I blame the director to a certain degree.  I expect someone who creates film to have at least seen as many movies as I have, and to know something about the history of film.  I also expect him or her to take responsibility for what goes on regarding their own productions.  Letting a plagiarized script slip just reeks of irresponsibility.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one.  In my opinion, by the time a director gets a script, it should have already passed through the hands of those responsible for checking it's originality.  Some high level executives had to feel good enough about the script to back it even to the point of selecting a director, so I can't agree that he should have to check it against all other movies made previously.

I had never even heard of Clonus... although, not to sound like I'm defending The Island in particular, because I had already decided not to see it until video, because it reminded me too much of "The Beach" and/or "The Island of Dr. Moreau" or whatever that movie was called.  Old hat is old hat, IMO.

And also my own opinion, but I think that to say "I expect someone who creates film to have at least seen as many movies as I have" is a bit biased, and can't really be used as grounds to accept or dismiss someone's art.  That would be like me saying "I expect someone who writes music to have at least heard as many songs as I have".  You can't really base someone else's artistic ability on your own experience.

Again let me state that I'm debating this topic on principal alone, and could give two sh*ts about Bay or The Island.  :thumb

As for the Hulk, the editing may have been over the top at times, but at least it was different.  I liked it personally, but to each his own.  I can see why someone wouldn't like it...

I like Ang Lee, but that editing decision was just baffling to me. The logic of making the movie "look like a comic book" by actually splitting the screen up into panels is on a level with the guys in Spaceballs who were "combing the desert". Sin City was 100x more effective at bringing a comic book world to life IMO.

:pfx

let's PRAY that they don't use the dread tactic of "comic-book panels" in the next TF movie! :tflaugh

Firstly, the people in charge of making the Transformers live action flick do not want it to suck which will cause them to lose money. Hasbro is not looking at this simply as a toy commercial. This is all Absurd.

B) IMHO this movie will likely be far better if Spielberg and co. focus on making it appealing to a wider range of audience than simply focusing on pleasing "fanboys".  Therefore, I have high hopes for it.

And three, Masters of the Universe is super cool. Anyone who says different is a smurf.

Is this gonna scare Micheal Bay from ever using Cy"clonus"? :tflaugh

Okay bad joke.  I'll be in my shame closet. :tfsad
