MH -- I did that recently, with someone who'd had no previous G1 exposure. He still mocks it to this day. Granted I dislike him for it, but I do my best to tolerate it. So don't think I don't know what it's like to deal with a non-Transfan

There you go. Welcome to "how the outside world views Transformers".

Now put yourself in Spielberg's shoes. He's got to make this property look GOOD to a large audience. How are you gonna do that when the original source material is ...what it is? You can't just transliterate the cartoon to the big screen and say "here it is." You have to make it something that non-fans would think is cool.

I personally have high hopes for this film. I really do. I'm excited to see what they come up with. That test footage of Soundwave and that car-bot PWNED me. I just don't understand why everyone's so morose about this. My goodness, people. They're making a frickin' Transformers movie!! Wake up!

it doesn't matter what you say to them MH...  people are going to hate it..

I remember walking out of spiderman 2 (the greatest movie ever) and hearing some ass wearing a spiderman shirt say, "Peter never knew Doc Ock, that was so stupid!"

it just makes me ill... and glad i'm not an extreme fan boy

Hey, I'm giving it a chance! I just hope they don't stray TOO far from the source material. Then again, how far would too far be?

I think that's the problem: everyone has different expectations of the movie, and no one is going to be 100% pleased.

My roommate hates the Spidey movies 'CAUSE THEY AREN'T COMIC-ACCURATE

Can you imagine my disgust?

And what even *is* the source material? The cartoon? The comics? Or just the basic premise?

I don't think the G1 characters were that well-defined (which is the fault of the episodic nature of the series). They were all pretty much stereotypes anyway -- Optimus was the noble hero, Megatron was the evil villain, Starscream was the usurper, Soundwave was the consigliere, the other 'Cons were the goons, etc. And that's really all there was to it.

All I really want is something creative and original....... and I also want to say "holy sh*t" a few times as well. :thumb

Personally, (and this is just MY opinion), I liked the original 3-part miniseries "more than meets the eye." That was thought out better than the rest of the series, had no matrix, established the characters, and set the pace for the world of the transformers. Now obviously the whole "oil rig" thing will have to go, but the feeling set by it is what is in my mind.

As for giving the transformers more than just stereotypical personas, hell yeah!

I actually still like all of G1 Season 1 a lot. If you notice, there was almost as much of a story going on there as there was in Season 1 of Beast Wars. But then that got totally abandoned in Season 2.

MTMTE is a great three-parter...... but it's already been pretty well established that the primary POV in the movie is not going to be that of the TFs. So using the MTMTE script as a hypothetical example, you would probably see the oil rig scene near the *beginning* of the movie, introducing the humans first, and then moving on to bring in the TFs. Which makes sense..... how many alien movies started from the aliens' POV?
