Transformers and Power Rangers

Recommended Posts

To BigDS Kids are used to animie, its praticly the only thing on anymore.

According to TVtome, the original Transformers series is also considered anime. But an American infuenced anime if that is the case. I do not even know the defenition of anime actually.

The Japanese can say a Transformer has a spark but that does not make it so. The reason why the death of Optimus Prime in the movie moved us is that he was our hero. He was already the greatest Transformer of all and then he died.

Most of the Armada/Energon Transformers are rather generic. G1 Ironhide's death was sad because it was a character you grew to care about as a kid. Starscream's death was shocking because one would never guess that it could happen.

One also got to know Beast Wars Dinobot as a very interesting character who was struggling with questions that none of us have an answer for. Do we have a choice in life or is it all preordained. He finally came to the conclusion that we do have a choice but that he could make only once choice.

That death really got to me. Not just because I cared about the character but also because it was done really nicely.

In Armada neither of the characters were that memorable. Hot Shot was the typical yongster. A lot like Hot Rod and just as brash and impatient. Demolishor was the lunk head who blindly followed Megatron's orders until he saw that was not "the way".

So if one of those characters died (such as Smokescreen "apparantly" did) then it is not going to matter much to a viewer. Smokesceens death did me little as the episode did not do much sense.

Throughout the whole episode Smokescreen is protecting the space team Mini-Cons. Then Megatron comes and they form the Requiem Blaster and allow him to kill thier protector. Yeah, makes perfect sense to me. :wtf

But the character was not nessecarly cool or interesting so I had not really grown to care about him. Seeing he was rather bland one could argue that he really was not sentinet/alive despite having a spark. So him dying is not really tragic in that sense.

In Energon they actually retrieved Inferno's spark from outer space while it has clearly been estalibished that a spark cannot exist out of a living body. Megatron had sparks in Beast Machines but that show took a lot of liberties with some storylines. And those sparks were extracted sl that could make a difference alltogether.

But Energon makes it all seem that even when a Transformer chassis is destroyed, the spark does not join the Matrix but can easily be retrieved.

So to me it looks like they do accept the concept of a spark but not as Beast Wars established it. They just see it as a computer core or base programming than something aking of a soul.

I remember that when Transformers aired both me and my brother liked the show. (He is 3 years yonger than I am.) When I bough The Movie on DVD several years back along with a few DVD's with episodes on it he actually borrowed them though he is techinally speaking not a fan but he still wanted to see them.

That is the impression Transformers had. Pretty much veryone who saw the original show thought it was cool. And they are right because back then it was the coolest thing on tv. And that was during a time when robot shows were literally clogging the airways.

People did not want the "whiney" Gobots who always looked a bit dumb to me. But not as dumb as Robotix or whatever the **** that was called. Humans controlling machines was such an incredibly dumb idea when I was young. Why watch a show about humans controlling machines when there is a cartoon about giant sentient robots?

So Transformers emerged victorious and even though the show only lasted 3.5 seasons, the toyline lasted a lot longer and the comic ran for 80(!) issues. Which is saying a lot actually.

Kids will always love Power Rangers. Unlike the Japanese who change what Transformers is all about Power Rangers does not change from Sentai apart from what is "absolutely" nessecary.

Actors replace the Japanese actors in the Sentai show (which could be seen as a dub) and a few stories are somewhat altered perhaps. Which is especially true for the first several seasons. But the fighting with the monsters only to destroy them with a combined weapon blast has not changed one bit.

The show is remarkably simply. Monster show up, Rangers kick its ass and monster grows. Rangers call zords and destroy monster final time. When the zords are not strong enough they bust out a new and stronger zord.

But it changes enough every season to make it fresh and that is apparantly enough to keep it running. I  must confess that I too watch it and I do not mind humans controlling giant robots simply because that is what Power Rangers/Sentai is all about.

The same goes for the cheesy attacks and attack modes. It works on Power Rangers/Sentai because the show has always been like that.

In Transformers it is the other way around. Transformers are sentient living robots with emotions and motivations just like us. They do not resolve fights with special attacks but use their skill and cunning to best their foes. And for the Decepticons devious plots.  :tfevil

That is what makes Transformers so great. And the Japanese are pefectly capable of making such a show because Medabots was like that. Well for the most part.

Even though Metabee possesed the Medaforce it did not always resolve the fight. About half of the time it did not work or did not "appear". So Ikki and Metabee learned (the hard way) to find ways of defeating foes without it.

Simply by using speed, strength, (of course the good old "rocket launch") and of course street smarts. And Ikki and Metabee formed a real bond together meaning that friendship can overcome anything. (I know, corny.  :tftongue)

So the Japanese do know how to make a cartoon that is different. And I really liked Metabots. The third season was less good because it changed a lot of things established in seasons 1+2. But I own those first 2 on DVD so that says a lot.  :thumb

Since Medabots is also anime then I certainly do like one or two anime shows. I just do not think then Japanese approach to Transformers is working.

And there are plenty of excellent non Anime cartoons as well. Justice League Unlimited spring to mind. Most of the Cartoon Network line up is non-anime. Let's not forget The Simpsons as well. Running for 18 seasons now it has set an unprecedented record in the history of cartoons.

I am not even sure if kids watch that many cartoons anymore. Back in my day (God, that makes me sound old) when cartoons were still good one would get up early for them.

Most of the current cartoons which air on TV do not appeal to me at all. A colleague of mine commented that nothing on tv meant for kids is even remotely decent. I can see her point because even I as a HUGE Transformers fan cannot get into the newer series. (So I am more likely to watch something else or play a video game. Which probably holds true for kids as well.)

Makes me want my favorite shows repeated. "Life with Louie", "Mad Jack The Pirate" and "Eek The Cat". All for which I actually turned in. Aaah, those were the days.  :thumb

the original transformers show was written by people in the us, but animated in japan. The deffinition for anime is japanese animation and the general style it carries.

Where in Energon had it been established that a spark cannot exist in space? Twice in the series a spark is saved while it is in space. When Demolisher was killed and of course, Inferno's death.

G1 was animated by Toei animation who did DragonballZ. they toned it down but its got a bit of an anime hint to it, not too much, just enough to give it its own specific charm if you ask me.

See this would be a cool vs. transfomers vs power rangers megazords all of them.

See this would be a cool vs. transfomers vs power rangers megazords all of them.

The Megazords would PWN anybody thats not a combiner/Cityformer

OK all the combinersd vs all the megazords.

OK all the combinersd vs all the megazords.

Would you stop it with the zords VS this, that, the other and your goldfish?

I have stop making vs topics ok. God! Just because I do a couple you think it is the end of the world. I just want to know all things about them ok. God!

The Transformers would beat the Megazords. The latter may be more powerful but are hardly as manouverable as Transformers whom also have much better fighting skills.

But it would be a tough battle though.

Yeah speically if they get there huge zords and serpentera then it would go to the power rangers.
