Michael Bay On Board To Direct Transformers Film

Recommended Posts

I'll take him over Roland Emmerich any day. We can all also thank god it's not Uwe Boll or Joel Shumacher.

and Paul Anderson :pfx :pfx

Now that we have a director, preproduction should start to get into full swing. We will probably hear about VA's by June at the latest. preliminary sketches will start to be leaked, or handed out on Murphy's or Dreamwork's sites if they're officially released.

This is the moment I have been waiting for, finally there will more than simple conjecture about the new movie!

Bay was an unexpected choice for me, but he sure beats Boll, Emmerich, Shumacher, and Anderson.

This is what I don't get. Murphy was all like "oh it could have been a lot worse if we hadn't gotten Bay." I'm like, there are fifty zillion directors in the world. Why are we even considering these crap directors as possibilities?

Oh yeah it's Transformers. :redface

The majority of those 50 zilliondirectors have absolutely no place being on a big budget, FX laden movie. That's just the kind ofspot that you need experience, or is that what you were implying?

I guess what I meant is, why are we assuming that only crap directors would be interested in this sort of movie? Don's comments seem to imply that if it wasn't Bay, it would have been some sucky guy. My question is, why is that? Are the producers aiming low? Or are there no good directors interested?

Personally, I'm less impressed with a director who can pull off a big action movie than I am by a director who can make me care about the characters onscreen. And maybe that's part of where I'm coming from as well.

But as I mentioned to OT just recently, I have matured over the years, but G1 has remained G1. Most fanboys make the mistake of not recognizing this, and expect their childhood memories to "grow up" with them. (Hence PG-13 comic book movies etc.) But they don't.

So I guess if I remove the fanboy-ness from myself, I can look at this and say "yeah it's a good choice." But the adult fanboy part of me will remain unsatisfied. But that's just the way it has to be.

Exactly how I'm looking at it Madhammer...Exactly! :thumb

Well at least he'd be behind it (hopefully)

They said they want it to be accessable, and having Bay on board makes it more likely.

Time will tell of course..........

OK, I get what you mean. Yeah, no self-respecting dramatic director would touch an 80's cartoon adaptation. At least not in America. If not done greatly, it could definitely hurt their reputation. There is a real intimidation factor to directing these kinds of films now, especially after the critical and commercial success of Spider-Man, X-Men, etc...an the flops like Elektra, Daredevil, the Punisher, Fat Albert, etc...After watching "the Hulk," I mentally knocked Ang Lee down a peg. I'd be terrified if somebody asked me to direct the upcoming Super-Man or Womder Woman, unless the scriupts were just amazing (but I'd still take the job and ruin it :P).

I mean, look at list of what we consider good directors. They have far more interesting scripts being thrown at them every day, whereas, Michael Bay knows at the bare minimum, he'll have a lot of fun with it. I wonder whether Pedro Almodovar, or Robert Rodriguez were ever considered? They've kind of recently walked that line between dramatic works and big-movie fare.

With the list of movies that Michael Bay has done, the new Transformers movie will probably look something like this:

I actually thought Rodriguez could have been a cool choice. Goodness knows the guy can get a lot of bang for his buck.

P.S. I agree 1000000000% about Ang Lee. Then again, I just saw Sin City, which is officially the best comic book adaptation of all time (visually speaking).

So, I've heard a lot of complaints that Bay is going to screw this up based on his previous body of work--and I've added some of those complaints myself. But looking on it now, "T2" and "True Lies" should've sucked since James Cameron did "Piranha 2: the Spawning" for Roger Corman. "Fantastic Four" is going to blow immensely because Tim Story's never directed a big-budget comic book flick in his life--he did "Taxi," for crying out loud! And "Spider-Man" should've been campy as hell and filled with gore since Sam Raimi did "Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead II"--essentially the same movie.

T2 and True Lies *did* suck. :P

But I see your point. You never know what a director is capable of. Peter Jackson is one example that comes to mind. And don't forget the Matrix - those guys hadn't done anything before that movie.

Nevertheless, in this case we're talking about a director who has already done big action movies before. So I think we do have a better idea of what to expect than we did with Raimi and Spider-Man, or Singer and X-Men, for instance.
