US Transformers G1 Reissue Line on Hiatus

Recommended Posts

Once again...all the hating on Hasbro. You people do realize that it's the US safety laws, NOT HASBRO, that made them butcher the weapons for the characters, shorten the smokestacks, etc. Sure, in Japan, safety laws are apparently much less strict (as are copyright laws, hence the massive ripping-off of real life sports/racing cars for the original Diaclone line). Hasbro's done plenty for the fans, so stop blaming them and point you fingers at that bunch of Pretenders called Congress who makes ghey-arse safety laws that hamper reissues.

do you guys really think the tru re-issues were aimed @ kids?? let me get a hit of whatever it is you guys are....

"hey dad, can you buy me this? please! pleeeeaase!"

"son, for 30 bucks, won't you rather have 3 or 4 transformers instead of 1?"

*dad goes back a week later to get g1 for himself*

Of course Hasbro is just conforming to safety laws...but they are child safety laws. They could have made the exact toys as Takara and slapped an mature toy sticker for adult collectors only. They adhered to child safety laws so that children could buy them too, not so it would be easy for 30 year olds to get them.

I don't hate Hasbro, I just think the marketing strategy for G1 reissues was poorly done. Obviously there is a target market of adult collectors, create a subsidiary to make the G1 toys and such, it is that simple.

It doesn't matter to me, I am perfectly happy with the Takara reissues. I am just saying that Hasbro lost the opportunity to do what Takara has done.

once again :pfx

your points are so clear and hasbro stupidly hasnt done that. idiots.

Most of the early Hasbro CS releases actually featured the term "Adult Collectible" printed on the packaging.  This was then covered by the "Authentic Reissue" sticker.

This is another case of Hasbro getting flack for bowing to a retailer's desire.  TRU wanted a product they could sell to kids (though they prompty Powerglideed that up by doubling the MSRP), hence made Hasbro modify the toys to be compatible with modern safety laws.  If they didn't, TRU wouldn't carry the line.

Between the poor sales and all the Starscreaming from fans, I'd be very surprised if Hasbro even bothers with another reissue.

they'll release more hopefully. if they pay attention, they'll see that all complaints by fans are easy to resolve. but then again this IS hasbro

Maybe when HasbroToyShop.com opens in May, we will find answers.  G1 stuff is definitely a collector-targeted toyline.  But  I *did* witness kids buying the seeker jets in favor of Energon toys a couple of times when I was at TRU.  So it isn't like the appeal is gone.

HasbroToyShop.com is going to be carrying all the new 3 3/4" G.I.Joe products as well as some My Little Pony, Weebles, and other Hasbro items that are going to be internet-only.  I would actually be quite surprised if they didn't try to push the site by adding a Transformers selection.  They haven't said anything yet, but it is definitely something I feel would get a lot of people to start using the site.

The Joe stuff shown has been very promising and I hope to see the G1 reissues go this route.

Also, I don't think we can really say that all of the changes to the G1 line made for safety were because of the US government.  That is where the finger was regularly pointed, but Hasbro has always held standards higher than what was regulated by law just to keep the company as far away from trouble as possible.

So I think that the changes (and unreleased items such as Fort Max or Megatron) are a mix of what is allowed by law and what is allowed by Hasbro's higher standards for safety.  They learned their lesson long ago with Flubber.  And because some of the regulatory changes made to toys are a mix, perhaps a collector-oriented website would allow some items to see re-releases truer to the originals.

Yeah, that is about it for flubber.  Except that I believe it was actually the backlot of Hasbro rather than Hassenfeld's own backyard.  Supposedly, on a hot summer day, Flubber will still seep up through the pavement.
