Metrodome Update Posted by:

Raymond T. of Seibertron has been in contact with Metrodome over future Transformers DVD releases in the UK. Here's the email he received from them:

"I've no news of the 20th Anniversary of the movie I'm afraid but we are planning a summer release of Takara - Headmasters.

We've managed to track down all the original 1991 Japanese Takara masters for Headmasters. These are better quality than the ones we have in the US and they are complete. Tracking them down has been a bit of a job.

My plan at the moment, is to release a 4 disc DVD using these original Japanese masters with the original Japanese audio and we'll create accurate English subtitles. The original dubbing by Star was pretty dreadful, so my thoughts are to keep it intact, as it was originally broadcast in Japan.

However, I am also looking into the possibility of copying the English audio dub from the US masters and placing it as an optional audio track on the DVD. This is only possible if they are exactly the same so we'll have to do technical comparisons and configurations etc. and this may end up being too expensive and the US master list is not complete so we won't be able to do this to all at the moment but I am looking into it.

As for re-dubbing. I've dismissed that for the moment as I think it will be far too expensive."

Chris McFeely, who has worked on the Seasons 3/4, Season 1 and RID Boxsets, has provided some more info:

Yeah, I can confirm that what Seibertron have posted is accurate - this is the news I was waiting for permission to release, but Ken hasn't replied to me in two weeks, and since Seibertron have it up now, what the hey.

The news, of course, was that Metrodome have acquired the original Japanese masters for "Headmasters." In the recent company restructuring, I'm sad to say that Jane Lawson, a lovely woman who was the product manager for Transformers and our link to what the company was up to, was made redundant. Ken Law is currently handling the product while searching for a new manager. Anyway, where Jane's approach to Headmasters was "We have the dub, and we'll see if we can get the Japanese," after this development, Ken's approach is "We've got the original Japanese, now we'll see if we can put the dub on it." The original version is now paramount. Personally, I've reccommended that the dub be included, just for the sake of giving viewers a choice. That bit about the US master list not being complete is news to me, however.

Regarding the movie, though, last I heard an Autumn release is planned. Which reminds me, I need to bring up the business of a fan commentary to Ken again!

Unfortunately, and for whatever reason, they only have 17 English masters, as opposed to the 35 Japanese ones they have.

Also, last year, it was reported that TVNihon and Wolfpack Productions would be doing the subtitles, but that's off the cards now.

Just checked Play.com. The Takara DVD are no longer available.

They do have the Robots In Disguise on DVD. I pre-ordered the 2nd set awhile ago.

Though these episodes have a Japanese "feel" to them, I think they are fairly enjoyable. Sky-Byte and Scourge are 2 excellent characters as well. :thumb

heres the link to the discussion with the pics of the extra on screen stuff. from what i've read it's like 15-20%more than seen before

Sounds cool but I would rather see them release Beast Wars or Beast Machines.

Just watched another episode of Beast Wars. The show had everything, nice single episodes while keeping a background storyline. But one could miss an episode and I think that was its appeal

The show also had cool characters with neat personalities, cultural references and all that. It still has the best animation seen in Transformers cartoons.

And though Beast Machines is not half that good, it is still a very good show. And it deserves a DVD release.

And I just remembered, Optimus Primal (re)discovered the Oracle in Beast Machines which is a mystical super computer which foretold the coming of the Transformers to Cybertron. So it was there before the Transformers which makes me wonder how they could have rebuilt that.

Cybertron (Seibertron) was only destroyed in the Japanese continuity. Beast Machines is part of the US continuity. Although it would be interesting to see how the handled that in Beast Wars Returns in Japan. :tflaugh

Seibertron, wasn't destroyed compleatly,

If galvatron could have survieved the Blast why not Vecter Sigma?

True but the Japanse story line is not part of the US continuity as far as I know. Rather like the Star Trek books and comics, plenty were released but to Paramount those storylines do not exist.

So anything that happened in those stores can basically be disregarded. Same goes for the US and UK comics. Though I did like the way those stories were handled. Sadly that comic also met its demise but not after 80 issues.

A record for a comic based on a TV show. Most comics end shortly after the TV show ended but Transformers managed to live on for several years.

In Japan The Us Story line is disregarded too, :P :P :P If we just ignore the steaming pile of crap called rebirth, deal with the Medeocureness of Headmasters we get the awsome goodness of Masterforce and Victory

Rebirth was a pretty decent episode.

One must remember that David Wise who wrote it was forced to introduce all those characters in 5 episodes. He had done that and was told that they liked it but it had to be cut down to 3. That is 40 minutes of screen time.

So he did a remarkable job considering the circumstances.

I tried watching Masterforce/Victory many years ago. All I remember was seeing Powermaster Optimus being driven by a human and Nightbeat being replaced by a female Transformer.

You can fill me in on what was going on (thanks in advance) but the thought of seeing Nightbeat (my first and one of my favorite Transformers) as a female sickened me. I know that she was a completely different character but Nightbeat is such a cool character that he should not have been left out.

I just saw those clips and did not really bother to watch several episodes. But at that time it seemed like I had seen enough.

Actually, the show was based on the comic.

YOu took it all out of contex, PM prime is driven by H1-Q the Nebulon in the comics, and Minerva has nothing to do with Nightbeat
