Transformers Animated Toys

Recommended Posts

Okay, so we all know that the new DOTM line, after about the first few waves, is gonna suck...I mean half of it is repaints. After I collect the main characters in the first waves, there won't be any more MSRP Transformers left for me to collect...and while I love the classics lines, they're really too expensive for me to collect en-mass now that none are in stores...

...So I recently got started watching & got caught up with Transformers: Prime. I LOVED it! First new figure I wanna buy is the SDCC Optimus...but not for $20. I'm hoping a deal will come my way for it soon, but I'm in no hurry.

Watching Transformers: Prime got me thinking about Animated...I remembered watching it a little, but not really getting into it. I also got a couple of the toys for my little brother, the only one I remember being DX Cybertronian Prime. WORST Transformer EVER. It fell apart & looked stupid in both modes.

Anyway, it wasn't that the show was bad...I just never got into it. So I went on youtube today & started watching the show...it's pretty good. Like they took a Transformers cartoon & injected it with copious amounts of character.

Then there's RTS Lugnut...GREAT toy! Only, watching the show, I really like the character model for Lugnut in that, too!

I'll get to the point...should I start collecting TF Animated toys? I don't want all of them...mainly the ones that appeared in the show. I especially want Blitzwing and Shockwave, as I think they're the most innovative of the bunch, from what I've seen. I've also seen some really shitty looking toys from TFA, though. And there's the matter of scale...I'd like all my Animated toys to at least be in scale with eachother, but certain ones look really tall, whilst others look really short. What do you guys think?

SDCC Prime is worth every penny! It was actually less than 20 when using the comic2011 promo code - free shipping and 10% off

Go order it right now. You wont regret it.

I say no. Mostly cos I personally don't believe in collecting lines that aren't current anymore... too much of a hassle IMO. Just pick a current series that you like now and collect it - and if nothing atm interests you, then just save your money until something better comes along.

forget scale completely. there's a small handful of characters that might be close, but throw that idea out the window.

that said, buy some and see how you like them. shockwave is awesome, as is blurr, lockdown, and ultra magnus. I personally enjoy leader megatron, but I've heard a lot of people are very 'meh' about him. if you don't mind used toys, I'm sure you can find some cheap ones on ebay.

Oh! Deluxe prowl (either normal or samurai, I have the normal one). Has a nifty transformation and pretty great posability.

I say yes, As you already seem like you know which toys from the Animated line you want, go ahead and get them off of eBay. They have been going for really cheap anyway. So your not losing money but saving money. For the ClassicVerse figures those can still be found along with the RTS line at retail. Ad they are not that expensive either. Most are cheaper then the DOTM figures.

I say sure but only limited to a few characters. I really enjoyed Voyager Optimusand his G-1 asthetic and thought he is still a fantastic toy as well as Shockwave, Blitzwing, Grimlock, Rodimus, Arcee, Swoop and Arcee. Voyager Megs was cool but I still hate those small hands that are always in b-slapping position.

Wasn't too inspired about getting Lugnut from Animated but the RTS version was well worth it.

So, I say if you do go for Animated, maybe like four of five figures but make sure you see some of the reviews first before buying. Optimus should be at the top of your list IMO.

Yes. If you like the show, you'll love the toys. I got most of the line, and there's hardly a truly bad figure in the entire line. All of the ones I've gotten had at least something to recommend them, and certain figures, like Leader Megatron, Ultra Magnus and either Prowl are nothing short of exceptional. Megatron is the best figure to bear the name.

I bought a ton of TFA figs, but only kept a few. For me, the best all around ones were DLX Prime (Cyb mode) and DLX Blackarachnia.

I thought I was gonna like Voyager Prime, but I didn't. Alot of people like UM, so I bought him, but didn't like him either. I thought Leader Bulkhead was better than him. Dinobots are great to have together. Rodimus would be up there with DLX Prime and BA, but I just don't like his robot mode.

I found Lockdown to be disappointing. The hands' inability to fold out straight hurts the robot mode, and I hate how the legs pop off so easily. I don't mind Shockwave, but some people are bothered by his tank mode being a "robot lying down" mode. :P Ultra Magnus is alright - although I wish the shoulders weren't set so far back. Otherwise he's nice. Blitzwing is an okay design, but I experienced a lot of QC problems with the Hasbro version -- I got Hasbro Blitzwing and the canopy tabs easily got stress marks and the wing pegs were deformed. So I ended up refunding and exchanging this toy four times from different stores and areas until I just gave up... my current Hasbro Blitzwing has stress marks on the canopy tabs (so I never transform it into tank mode) but at least the wing pegs aren't deformed. I later got a TakaraTOMY Animated Blitzwing which is made of superior quality plastic, and I can transform it to tank mode (although I prefer the colours on the Hasbro version). Animated Blitzwing is my nightmare QC story. :(

Prowl is indeed a nifty and clever design. :) The Dinobots... I dunno, not terrible but not fantastic either. It bugs me how Grimlock's robot head is clearly visible in Dinobot mode -- boo. And don't even start me on the stupidity that Hasbro went through in calling Slag "Snarl." (-_-) Arcee and Rodimus are pretty nice and Blackarachnia is pure win. :)

I like Bumblebee, but I know some people are disappointed in him, particularly with the mismatching yellows. Lugnut was a massive disappointment. Voyager Bulkhead is okay, but he's puny. Leader Bulkhead is nice, but overpriced -- worth it if you can get him on sale. Actually, don't pay above retail price for ANY of the Leaders because they were all shelfwarmers and stores had to massively discount them to get rid of them in the end. Leader Megatron is indeed a very cool toy. :D Slag^Snarl is alright, and Swoop is just disappointing. I dunno, I get a feeling that a lot of people like the Dinobots just because they're Dinobots... but taking that aside, I find them to be pretty mediocre toys. Blackout's okay and Deluxe Ratchet's decent.

The Starscream mould is disappointing... such a strange and unaerodynamic jet mode (there's no way in hell that thing could possibly fly in atmosphere); and I hate how those two back panels always fall off. Gah. Waspinator's also okay, although the two little bestial arms can sometimes pop off if you're not careful. Ironhide's... meh... robot mode's okay (strange weapon though), but a rather underwhelming Cybertronian alt mode. Soundwave & Laserbeak are pretty kewl though.

Jazz is alright, though I wish his chest would lock gooderer and one of the wheels on mine doesn't roll properly. Deluxe Cybertronian Optimus Prime is alright - Deluxe Earth mode Prime's a good mode and I like the axe, but I hate the battle damage deco (lame). Ditto Deluxe Megatron (pink scars?! Really??). Voyager Optimus Prime is pretty neat - although the spinning waist gimmick is needlessly annoying, and the trailer/axe accessory is a complete WOFTAM. The faceplate gimmick is pretty cool though IMO. Sentinel Prime's also worthwhile IMO.

Jetfire and Jetstorm are individually pretty weak toys, and the combined Safeguard gestalt is meh. If you really want this set, get it on sale. I'm not a huge fan of the Stunticons... Dead End is probably the best looking of that set, but even then those figures were overpriced IMO (I know it's because they're limited exclusives, but they're still really expensive! And I can imagine that the post-convention prices must be even crazier!) - I never bothered getting this set, but I've seen and handled my friend's set IRL. I do like how they have their own Stunticon insignia though - that's cool. Oh, and I haven't played around with Motormaster yet, only looked at it - so my opinion on that toy might change after I get a chance to muck around with it... but I doubt it :P

Cheetor is just f'ugly. I suppose the concept seemed good in theory, but the execution just doesn't work. Just stick with Blurr. Oh, I really like Blurr too -- arguably one of the best Blurr toys ever made. Unlike his Armada and Cybertron counterparts, he's actually really slick and streamlined; much like the G1 toy, but not so top heavy and prone to falling over! He really does have that "Cybertronian racehorse" look to him, like his robot for is designed for high speed running. Love it. :) There may be some QC issues in some figures though.

Wreck Gar is okay - although he's a big back-pack-former. I like him, but he might not be everyone's cup of tea. I recommend checking out a friend's Wreck Gar first before deciding -- probably best to do that with all of them; try before you buy. :) Most of the Legends and Activators are cool, except for Legends Prowl - he sucks.

Omega Supreme is hands down the best toy in Animated though... I wish.
