megatron's new look

I think the idea of giving him a truck mode was that it was supposed to be a perversion of Optimus' truck mode.

The perversion of the form Optimus took theory is interesting and plausible but has anyone stopped to think maybe this alt mode is purely strategic? Perhaps Megatron needs to get somewhere/something that can't be attained through the usual Decepticon smash-and-grab tactics. The whole point of transforming in the first place is to blend in.

I doubt it was to blend in to get something, as his truck mode fits more with a demolition derby. I'm thinking he is trying to hide from Shockwave, since Shockwave always either tries to kill him or does kill him. At least in the comics

It's actually the first thing I thought of, but...that would call for a level of strategic thinking we haven't seen in THIS Megatron. He's been purely "crush, kill, destroy." He should be capable of this much, but that represents a flaw in the characterizations as presented in the Bayverse. I will readily admit that this theory makes the most sense. However: Bayverse Megs seems completely irrational and is right on the border of being Galvatron--if ot in ame, then definitely in personality, which is why I subscribe to the "Megatron's done flown over the cuckoo's nest" theory. It fits with the BAYVERSE Megatron as they have presented him. Besides: this particular truck would have a difficult time blending in anywhere other than the set of a Mad Max movie.

My only issue with the "Megatron done goneout his damn mind" theory is the distinct lack of humiliating defeats he has actually suffered. If you go back to War fo Cybertron (which is supposed to be a prequel to several TF universes including the Bayverse) he WAS driven off planet but not before rendering it uninhabitable. We'll call that a wash. In the first movie, he whooped Prime so soundly that Prime was gonna commit hari kari to keep him from getting the Allspark. Sam killed Megs while Prime watched. That still makes it Megatron:1, Prime: 0. In ROTF, Megatron actually kills Prime (yeah, it was 3 on 1 but c'mon, they're Decepticons). Megatron:2, Prime: 0. Then at the end of ROTF Prime finally scores a definitive (albeit marginal) victory over Megs, making the final score Megatron: 2, Prime:1. It's not exactly a record to flip your grits over.

And that still speaks to my theory of blending in, just for a different reason. I appreciate the support. :P

Um, do you have a source for that? Because I don't think it's ever been said that War for Cybertron is a prequel to the Bayverse.

Before the novel Transformers Exodus: The History of the War for Cybertron came out, there was a release stating that amongst other things the book and game were an attempt to unify various TF realities. Thus Soundwave's minions were retconned into a team of "minicons" and various other changes were made. I believe this came from Alex Irvine himself (the author of Exodus) and I read the release on this site probably a year or so go. I'm sure it's in the archives if you want to dig it up. For me though it's moot either way since I only brought it up in relation to Megatrons win record and WFC could be called a draw at best.

Here's my problem. WFC represents a retcon, and a retcon not immediately available to a mass medium like say, a movie might be. The events in the movie happened, and were privy to a much larger audience. You're exactly right: Megatron had Prime on the verge of death in the first movie, and did so convincingly. ROTF washed that all away (and, to a slightly lesser degree having Sam ash him in the first flick) with Megatron having to rely on an inordinate amount of "outside interference" to finish Prime off in ROTF (while Prime was laying a profound beating on him and his two heavily-armed troops) and then Prime did it AGAIN in Egypt. Sure, Prime was now powered up. But, given the beating he had administered to Megs just prior to that, it's easy to see it happening again. Whatever good will Megs inspired in the first film was forgotten by the end of the second because of the WAY in which he lost. And the defeats were humiliating. He was offlined by a human--a subadult human, at that--whose race reverse-engineered the mechanical details of his physicality. Were it possible for a robot to be raped, I'd assume that that would be the rough approximation of that. His remains were then dumped like so much multi-ton refuse.

He was then summarily no-sold by Optimus in ROTF.

That goes beyond whatever score one might want to keep. We are now at a point where it is hard to take Megatron seriously as a legitimate threat. FWIW: Animated committed the exact same sin, and it pisses me off. A good number of his Bayverse subordinates totally outshone him, and Starscream actually did so in a quasi-leadership capacity.

To brand Megatron with an alternate mode so similar to Prime's has the deleterous effect of driving home this point even further. Given his portrayal thus far in the Bayverse, I'd say Megs needs either a rubber room, the dosage increased on his medication, a simple hug, or all three.

Your reasoning is well thought out but seems to support a more significant grudge against humankind than against Prime. He may very well be losing it but the thesis of my argument is that Optimus is not the cause. Honestly though this is all speculation. We have no idea what mental state Megs is in and won't until the movie comes out. Actually, the novelization of DOTM may offer better insight, albeit to a smaller audience. I really figure the simplest explanation for his new alt mode is that he is doing whatever it takes to either win or simply survive.

Speaking of smaller audiences, while WFC and TF Exodus had the same outcome, I was actually refering more to the book which had to have had a lesser following than the game but a more detailed picture of the consequences of the war. However, like it or not, retcon or not, both book and game are now official cannon. Fans who want to be fully informed should check both out. I get the feeling that those who follow Transformers more casually wouldn't really sweat the details one way or the other.

It might be that he does indeed hate humankind as much as he hates Optimus, remember in the first movie he was on ice for how long? 80 years I think it was. Knowing that the humans were probing him. I'd be pissed at humanity also. LOL

But I still like believing that he is trying to run and hide from Shockwave.

Now as far as the retcons of WFC and Exodus, we already know there are problems with the continuity of it all, and last I checked it goes WFC to Exodus to Exiles (the sequel) to Prime. So it has no bearing on the MovieVerse anyway.

Besides not having the right mechanics to turn Megatron into Galvatron who ended up insane and deranged. The only possible coarse was to leave Megatron as Megatron but have him go insane without becoming Galvatron.
