How did G1 officially end?

Recommended Posts

the simple reason for that is there are to many official factors that can be considered leaving it a matter of oppinion.

Oppinions vary.

So to do that you have to identify what actualy is G1 and that brings us back to my first sentence and the loop goes round and round and round....

Anyways, back on track, the ending depends on locale. As growing up in the US, I saw the last episode of Rebirth to be the end of G1. This dealt with Galvatron and Scorponok flying off into space.

Then again, we are talking about a nomenclature (sic) debate. In order for something to be G1, there needs to be a G2. "G1" was not a term officially recognized until much later after G2 had ended. G2 existed in these places only, so the answers are pretty much solid:

1. US Cartoon (continuity-wise) G1 ended with Rebirth, but technically it is not G1 at all. G2 was a re-release of the same content and has no story relation to the original series. In fact, the term G1 is still primarily a fan-based term even though it has "Recently" been picked up by Hasbro. IIRC, Takara may have been the first to official use it concerning toys or characters of that period with their "Generation One" series of toys.

2. US Comic G1 ended with issue #80 and the Last Autobot. G2 comics stories continued almost directly after that, but it is a lot harder to determine exactly what the main differences between G1 and G2 are to say why the new series would be called G2. It was obviously only done to sell the toys, as a lot more things changed during G1 than G2.

3. UK Comic G1 ended a little different than US comic because it didn't have the same kind of G2. I never read the UK only G2 comics, but do know that Death's Head's universe, as well as anything else in Marvel UK like Action Force, Dragon's Claws, etc were thrown into there.

4. Japanese Manga basically followed the TV shows, or were meant to integrate with it better than say the US comic to TV Show. In this case, G1 ended with Operation Combination (I believe was after Battlestars) and the G2 comic did not show up for about 3 years later.

What seems to be mixing people up is all the retconned content. A series can officially end at a certain point but that does not mean that things written later can't also relate to that either. Ignore all the newer stuff and just remember back in the day and you can easily find how these things worked out.

so basicly nothing matters unless it fills a gap so long as somene agrees with it?

Once again, it's down to personal taste huh?

Not quite.

By saying not quite, you are effectively stating there is no choice(Either you accept it and stay or not accept it and leave). Sorry you just lost with that. In then no matter if it is Transformers, Star Wars, GI Joe, M.A.S.K, or anything else. In the end it always come down to personal choice and taste.

Stop being a Hasbro Pawn and just enjoy Transformers as a personal enjoyment. If you stay on the official band wagon like you do. You will stop enjoying before you know it.

On the other extreme, if a fellow like Tramp finds enjoyment by dwelling on the provided fiction, who are any of us to call that wrong.

Here's a case in point. story wise I know Tramp swears by Hasbro, however on that same coin, he's also an accomplished customizer and artist concerning Transformers.

Think of it this way. I see the provided fictions as meer entertainment. The draw of Transformers for me is the figure. Figure which I put a sense of (not really monitary) value in and on average will not modify.

It's the other side of a flipping coin. While I don't care what people do with there figures, Tramp cares how stories are precieved even when the arguments have run out

-and come on man, we've been there plenty of times...

Honestly at this point, the only thing we can all agree on is that we have to enjoy whats in front of us as we see fit. In that, the only thing that is wrong, is that saying some one is wrong.

If at the end of discussion you don't like someones point of view, the best you can do is wish them well with it and retire to your own.

If they still persist even at that point, well, clean living is the best revenge :tfgrin

Pretty much. The thing is that what we're mainly supposed to be talking about here anyway is what is the official ending of the G1 continuity. The whole discussion is about official policy. In other words, canon. In that respect, personal preferences of "fanon" vs canon isn't really a factor. It's strictly a matter of what is official; what is canon. Anything else just confuses the issue and doesn't answer the original question.

As far as SW goes, I've never seen anything from Lucas on the otherwise aside from the occasional nod towards various EU stuff. However, that wasn't the point I was trying to make. I was basically attempting to use it as a parallel for this discussion, which didn't end up being a useful parallel. As we go from whats basically movies and supplemental to thousands of alternate realities.

Actually guys, I'm more of an official fiction guy myself. I do enjoy the occasional fan comic (TF Chronicles, Universe Of Primacron, Transmasters comics FTW), but I never regard them for what really happened. What really happened is always down to official sources. Now I always try to make a point in noting what media something came from (comic/toon/gum wrapper), but not always. Somewhat akin to somebody saying something happened in G1, but it was in a UK comic.

No, it wasn't really that useful, but that's besides the point. The rest of your statement, I'm in complete agreement.

12 pages later and still NO one agrees to agree on how G1 ended in U.S. canon?? U.S canon is really the only thing that matters right??

We are not in japan so all the other line of fiction are just a compilation of extra curricular activities if YOU will.

Read and watch english dubbed stuff all you want, Rebirth pt. 3 is the end to the G1 series.

Here's the thing, it's not just "US" canon being discussed, nor is it simply about when the series officially ended. It's a question about when the cartoon continuity ended officially, both Japanese and US, since it's all canon. The continuity, either US or Japanese both outlasted the series themselves. The continuity didn't end until at least Universe. The continuity continued even past Operation Combination with the US and Japanese "Beast Era" shows (Beast Wars, Beast Wars 2, Beast Wars Neo, Beast Machines) and culminated with Wreckers and Universe. And technically, it never "ended", it's just that the last stories specifically set in the G1 cartoon continuity to date was Universe.

Or hey, Timelines...

Or hey, Timelines...

Possibly. I'm not sure if the new Wings of Honor tales take place in the G1 cartoon continuity or their own continuity. It might be cartoon, so that it possible. I looked up the TFWiki.net page on Wings of Honor, and the "Items of Note[/i] had this to say about it:

According to Pete Sinclair, this continuity "is VERY similar to the original G1 toon, though it is different enough to allow us some leeway in the overall story telling. [...] Scourge will have always been in his BotCon 2009 body, Hot Rod in his Universe Legends body and so on. As time goes on there will be more subtle, and not so subtle, differences."[1]

This seems to suggest that Wings of Honor is set in an alternate cartoon continuity that is close, but not quite the same.

From what I understand, it's in a version of the G1 Universe. So far it contains Wings Of Honor, The 06 BW set (name escapes me at the moment),and G2 Redux. I'm not sure if the 05 set falls into this setting. But seeing as they repurpose so often, it could be. But if it doesn't, that 05 set does take place prior to BW in the G1/G2 era. And then theirs classics, which is an offshoot of the Marvel canon...

Screw it, G1 or hell... Transformers hasn't ended...

No, it hasn't, which is great for us. I hope it never does end. Timelines though, isn't itself a continuity. It's simply the vehicle Fun Publications uses to tell its stories taking place in multiple continuities. It's quite likely that the last three BotCon sets each take place in separate (though similar) continuities within the G1 family. The '05 set is indeed likely part of the main G1-Beast Wars continuity, the others are likely to be alternate G1 continuities.
