So wrong

How about going into Walmart picking up a HA Sideswipe, along with other odds and ends. Noticing the cashier didn't ring up the HA Sideswipe but not say anything pay the $15 bill and walk out with the HA Sideswipe? It's not my fault she didn't ring it up, so why should I have to say anything? Is that wrong?

nah, this is fine. It wasnt like HA Sideswipe was hidden inside of another item or your jacket or anything...was he :tfhuh

How "this" is fine? Say you just received your paycheck, put it in your wallet along with your credit cards, start walking on the street, and accidently drop your wallet. The guy just behind you clearly saw you dropped it, and there's only two steps between you, but he says nothing and just grabs the wallet, then he puts it in his bag. Would you still think it's "just fine"? After all, "it wasn't like he pickpocketed you or anything, was he?"

If the cashier didn't ring it up, and you didn't notice it at the moment, may be -just may be- it would be ok to keep it after you eventually noticed. But yes, it IS your fault that letting the cashier PAY for YOUR toy.

Yes - it's morally wrong.

However, the CASHIER is not the one paying for it. It is not like her drawer came up short, and thus it will be taken out of her paycheck. She did not take a reduced amount from what the register showed. It simply wasn't rung up. Hence, there is no record of which cashier it went thru. The toy could have been stolen out of the back door for all they know. It will simply show up as a discrepency in the inventory, and the company itself will absorb it as a loss.

I'm not saying it is still not morally wrong -- but it is INCORRECT to say the "CASHIER" is the one buying it, even tho the cashier did create a mistake. And it's not quite the same as 'dropping a waller" - the cashier didn't do her job.

Once again, just setting the record straight - it is still morally wrong to KNOWINGLY take something - it's akin to stealing. But he stole from the company, not the cashier.

i'm sorry. in my country, stores have strict return policies and never take anything back before carefully checking. Therefore there's not any swapping. Also they would check that day's sales and probably put the blame on the cashier whoever sold another HA figure that day (tf toys don't get bought that much in Turkey), or at least check it from security cameras and will cut it from her/his salary. If that's not the case in USA or Wallmart, then as you said it's still ethically wrong but at least you'll cause less damage to another person.
