Movie Critics and their terrible reviews of RotF

Recommended Posts

I enjoyed seeing it tonight in that there was cool action and I feel better than when I left the house, but fairly mediocre at best is about right.

I know that my opinion is one of many and many liked the movie a lot, but the people that were saying it's the best thing they ever saw... they aren't wrong. Just easily impressed.

And yes, a critics job is to tear a movie apart and expose all of its weaknesses. Only a truly great film should get good reviews.

nominated for Quote of the Week! :D lol :tfevil

Agreed! Eloquently stated. The 'critics job' is spot on to!

The problem is that people can't accept if someone found a movie crap, that person found a movie crap. I get it all the time when I say I didn't like Finding Nemo or Fight Club.

:shrug

Watch fightclub again but shut it off right after they have the birds poop on the BMW dealership. If your not done figure Ed Norton got arrested either after he beats the blonde guy or Bob gets shot.

You'll feel alot better about it.

Don't remember that bit. Either was asleep or just phenomenally bored...

Why get upset over someones opinion. You have yours, they have theirs. Are you upset over someone not liking the movie because you did and if they don't agree with everything you say they are wrong?

Hmmmm, I like chessee cake. I hope you do to so it's not wrong for me to like it.... On second thought I don't care.

But... do you like chocolate cheese cake??

I don't like cheesecake at all :puke

critics are like the hairy molds of movies, nobody wants them!

Very well thought out indeed. Elegantly written. So I'm left with one question...did we see the same movie?! What I just read was for quite possibly the best movie of the year...what I saw definitely fell short of that, IMO of course. I didn't hate it, nor did I love it (as a whole). I liked parts, I really liked parts, and then I really didn't like parts...the latter is what drug the cinematic experience down for me. I think that's what so many are trying to convey, whether successfully or not, throughout these threads without getting into the "hated it/loved it" argument with other members. They're stepping outside of just being a Transformers fan. The critics rip movies apart on a daily basis...that's their job. Some will like it, some will not. That's just the way it's gonna be. What seems to be taking place HERE is that an uproar has commenced b/c the majority of critics don't agree with what I would dub as maybe half of the fans thought about it. :shrug

Jin;

I understand - it seems all too easy right now to pick a random review of Revenge of the Fallen and be immediately greeted with a snide aside on the origins of the film in a line of toys, or a cheap shot aimed at the fans of the franchise. These cross-cultural potshots might pass for entertainment in the eyes of the current review readership; but as a forward-going move, it seems foolhardy - the readership of the future will be comprised of persons that grew up with cartoons to the left and comics to the right. They will not be so appreciative.

However, I think you unfairly ascribe the motivations behind these little snippets littering each review to the tone and final verdict of the review itself; and I do not believe that this is the case. Critics have a specific job - to judge a movie based on a generally recognized set of criteria - and this is precisely what they have done. If Revenge of the Fallen is to be found lacking in plot, it is because its plot lacks; if the acting is found poor, it is because of poor acting. One might find variation from one critic to another, but an entire body of critics moving in near-unison does not suggest an overarching conspiracy of bias at work.

Furthermore, these critics have, together, judged highly a number of works that fit the description of superhero and fantasy adaptation. Iron Man, The Dark Knight, X2, Spider-Man 2, and even Hellboy II: The Golden Army are all rated at 85% or more at rottentomatoes.com. This does not seem to indicate that the Roger Eberts of the world are quietly looking down on new-media adaptations, and I imagine that we will find this list growing as the years go on.

I do think that your argument that the review criteria in use are outmoded and no longer accurately reflect the needs of the journalistic review of today is rather interesting. I do not wish to dwell on the subject too much, as I feel it would involve arguing in favour of a sort of critical prescriptivism - that critics are 'cultural guardians', if you will - but irrespective of our own stances, I think we can both agree that there is a widening gap between the critically and popularly appreciated.

Finally, thank you for taking the time to articulate your thoughts to us - I might not completely agree with what you say, but I found the way you said it to be both informative and thought-provoking.

Movies or music, critics are useless. I'm able to form my own opinion.
