ROTF Constructicons

You definitely have to have him in said pose (or a couple others) resting on a solid surface (desk, display case, etc.), otherwise he's not gonna stand for ya! By the way...for clarity's sake, he's not leaning against the poster board (in the pic, it kinda looks like he might be)...whatever, I'll shut up now about Demolisher! :)

"Problem, officer? Me? No... I'm not loitering. I just, uh, I just have to stand like this. You want me to move? Sure, I'd be happy to. Uh... can I get you to like, help turn my wheel here? No, the other one. Why do I have two wheels? Well, let's just say this - there's a reason Cybertron has an age-old law against bicycles and unicycles marrying, eh? Sorry, bad joke. Yeah, I'd just go all excavator here and rumble off into the distance, but my treads don't actually, ya' know, rotate. Design flaw? You're telling me! If I ever catch up to Primus, there's going to be hell to pay... pretty big 'if' though..."

So did you happen to check out the Constructicon's Robot Size Comparison thread? I had some issues with the chart (the differences between all 3 modes...vehicle/robot/combiner), so I re-posted the chart w/ a few tweaks made:

http://forums.TFormers.com/talk/index.php?...p;#entry1528545

It appeared that the original was a hodge-podge of various Constructicons (vehicles/robots), other than the base 7. So, I quickly photoshop'd a feeble attempt to base it solely on the 7 main designs, scaling everyone closer to what felt a little more appropriate. Damn, I hope they finish these guys out, b/c I'm ready to start brainstorming about how to combine them! :thumb

I totally agree with what you said about Rampage being a 'peg-leg', so I went back and re-watched the combination sequence a couple of times to try and figure out what is going on.

Insofar as I can make out, Scavenger and Mixmaster transform as expected into a torso and head. Scrapper turns into Devastator's right arm and hand. Now, this is where things start to get a little off-kilter - Hightower turns into Devastor's left arm, and connects to Rampage, who forms the left hand. It's Rampage we can see 'scuttling' during the sequence. Long Haul becomes the right leg (offscreen), and it appears to be Overload that forms the left leg.

If you watch the part where Devastator is almost complete, and he takes a single step, you can clearly see that his left leg is red... not yellow. (Which means, amongst other things, that the concept art we've been shown is actually out of line with the finished product.)

Now, the problem is this - if Scrapper is released as a voyager, and Hightower is released as a deluxe, then proportionally things won't be too bad. If Scrapper is released as a deluxe however, then that means Devastator's left hand will be the same size and mass as Devastator's entire right arm... :lol

You might be correct on that. I just watched

, and it appears to confirm your suspicions, particularly at point 3:04 into the video as Devastator climbs the Great Pyramid. The left leg looks to be detailed in red and white (Overload's colors) and has wheels, not caterpillar treads.

Wait...hold on! I hear what you're saying...and believe me, it's an extremely enticing argument...something that could put to rest the 'peg-leg' debate! HOWEVER, there's one thing that disproves this argument...how do you explain the track foot that can plainly be seen? That isn't part of Overload. And I don't think it's that clear to see the color, red or yellow. :shrug

UgotTheTouch83 has a great animated gif depicting the legs with quite a bit more clarity:

EDIT: Crap...it's too big to upload...check it out on his profile!

I think what we've got may be a case of even more than seven Constructicons forming Devastator. :schin Before plugging the left hand into Hightower (left arm), we definitely see a Rampage figure transform into said hand. Now, I've seen some HUGE bulldozers that could come close to competing with Long Haul...perhaps this is a separate, larger Rampage...but I don't recall seeing one in this frame. Could it be that we didn't see this bot in this particular scene, and the transformation for the left leg took place off screen? Why the hell does this have to be a so convoluted?!

I REALLY like your idea, JOP...and I'd MUCH rather that be the case, and put this whole debate to bed. But I don't physically see the evidence to support it. If you've got any screen shots that say different, please post them!

EDIT: Crap! Now I just saw the video that Tramp posted...totally confused at this point! :argh

Alright, now that I've watched it another 5x...I'm seeing something that could either be interpreted as a 'wheel' or could be the main wheel of the tracks on a bulldozer...for the foot. And the saturation is so bad in that clip...I honestly can't tell what color it is. :shrug Let me look around some more...this definitely needs more analysis!

Well, I think I might have an answer for you, of sorts. The animated .gif in UgotTheTouch83's signature uses footage from the earliest trailers, which - as we know - was not the finished product. (For one thing, Devastator brings his hand down crushingly on a truck that isn't there; for another, part of the reason we can see Devs so clearly is because all the wonderfully obscuring clouds of sand and dust haven't been rendered in yet.)

What is interesting is that this 'Proto-Devastator' follows the concept images much more closely, with an almost entirely silver / grey face and the yellow leg with treads for toes. Also, it's pretty obvious that Hasbro designed the supreme-sized toy around the concept art. So... why did ILM change things so late in the game? I wish I knew...

Anyhow, here's a still I pulled from the HD version currently circling the sub-forum. It's pretty difficult to tell what's going on, and the YouTube compression hasn't helped... (although the video quality wasn't all the great to begin with, *cough cough*). I've highlighted the left leg... hopefully enough red shows through the colour bleaching to make some sense.

Damn that YouTube compression! I think I see some glimmers of red in there. While significant, it still only addresses color...the Mega Power Bot, Burger King, and Robot Heroes versions all use an orange-tinted left leg, but it still appears to be some semblance of a bulldozer used (with tracks). And there's the red Rampage that battles Bumblebee.

What I'm really looking for is something that'll disprove the use of a bulldozer & screams earth loader!

Here's what I'm seeing in Tramp's posted video:

0:09 - Long Haul & Rampage pull up together overlooking ridge.

0:49 - You can see a tread positioned on the outer edge of the foot & another that appears to be running through the knee, as the leg is lifted in the background (beyond the head in the foreground...look to the right).

1:31 - White & red colors can be seen on the upper thigh & a horizontally rotating tread is projecting from the back of the knee.

2:53 - Our first shot of the wrecking balls...but if you look past those, you can see rotating tread running through the back of the leg & a glimpse of another tread along the outer foot.

3:00 - This is the shot that we could see as a 'wheel', but it looks more like the upper & back wheels holding on the tread (you can see a tread wrapped around these w/ a little bit of flapping).

3:33 - Money shot! But there's more white detail on the upper portion of the leg, and the lower portion appears either red or yellow (it's really too dirty & too much shadow to tell); but again we see a rotating tread through the back of the knee.

I keep seeing treads where I wanna see wheels, if this is Overload... :shrug

I'm probably going to take quite a few liberties when I try getting my Constructicons to combine. I'm even thinking of getting Dirt Boss in there. A forklift is kind of a construction vehicle. Maybe I'll use him as the hand...

I was thinking about using Dirt Boss too! I was able to fashion him into some semblance of a face! Then I gave him to my son...

I'll have to track down the pieces & post a picture for ya! :thumb

Check it at point 3:04 and at point 3:37. Point 3:04 shows wheels around the ankles with no treads, as well as red and white detailing. Point 3:37 shows where the leg connects to the hips, and it's definitely red. There's also a huge wheel in the image with no treads. In none of the shots you mentioned, did I see any treads.

Seriously?! This sucks...I'm honestly not trying to argue with you this time (believe it or not! :D)...but I think what I'm seeing as treads (and the turn-wheels/gears that hold the treads on...whatever they're called), are the same thing that you're seeing as wheels (whether that be from a side view or viewing the tread of the tire/wheel straight on). I really wished we had some clearer shots...but with what we've got, I can't help what I see! I'd really rather see clear, sure-fire wheels in there, b/c that'd make a lot more sense for it to be Overload (size-wise). I'd totally be fine with being wrong about this! But my eyes are seeing differently. :shrug

I'm in complete agreement though that this isn't the bill of goods that we've been sold from Hasbro or Takara! I think this is some ILM post-magic! :thumb

Ahhh, I want some clarity on what's going on with the left side of Devastator! Maybe these are some questions for the next round of Hasbro 'burning questions'?! Or better yet...these should be asked of Bay & ILM! Is it or is it not Rampage that serves as the left hand that plugs into the left arm (Hightower)? Who the hell is the left leg? Overload? Rampage? A combination of the two? Was this a post-production surprise? Obviously! :roll And why do NONE of the Devastator toys reflect more accurately what we've seen in the movie?

Well, the picture isn't the greatest, so there could be treads there. However, at point 3:22 I noticed one of the "hands" doesn't look like it's made of shovels, but rather looks like a four clawed "grabber" talon like those found in those arcade games where you try and grab a toy. The shot of the Rampage and Long Haul on the top of the cliff look about the same size which would make the Rampage too big for a hand. It's possible that, like I originally believed, that the Hightower was simply picking the Rampage up to move it back so it could form the leg, and that the Overload forms much of there lower torso and upper legs while the Long Haul and Rampage form the lower legs. There are definitely a lot of contradictions and confusion in the film from watching Youtube clips, because of their quality. If we had a clear DVD to use, it would probably be easier to resolve. Without a DVD quality sequence to analyze though, all we can do is speculate. All I know for sure is that there are only seven Constructicons that comprise Devastator, and we can clearly identify the locations of five of them.

Oh, please don't hate me! :bounce But here's another monkey wrench to throw into the mix! When Turturro & the kid drive up & get out of their car, they're standing beside a Long Haul that's already there (1). They look back and see Construction vehicles pulling into the quarry (4). Those 4 vehicles pull beside a crane that's already sitting there (1). Then they look over the ridge to see a bulldozer & dump truck pull up to the ledge (2). So, that's 8 vehicles in all...? And...why are there two Long Haul vehicles in this scene...wtf is going on?! :9000

Here's a shot of the complete scene w/no cuts:
