Two more jets for ROTF Superion by Hip-Hoptimus Rime

Recommended Posts

I've got more details and pics to post later, I'll try to get my real camera working instead of my phone-cam.

EDIT- FWIW, in the full body pic, the right arm is fully bent, w/ the upper arm vertical, while the left arm is "straight" and rotated about halfway up, just to give you an idea of how the new arms work.

Interesting alternate transform of the actual arms themselves... might have to try that.

As for the other two figures, can you try to explain what you did?

(I really want to get you guys some good pics of this whole deal, I'm so busy lately. I'll get them ASAP, promise! Pinky swear!)

Oh holy cow, I love Superion! I did the knee fix so his legs can bend normally, and I've been playing with new configurations for his arms. I came up with a new one, I think. It uses the angular jets for arms, using the leg parts sort of joined together as the lower arm. They hold together well or posing, but not necessarily actual play. The angular jets are rotated so the cockpits are pointing upward instead of down. Their legs are then straightened out so they point down. This gives you the front half of the arm and the rear half. Turn the foot on the front portion a quarter turn and install the hand. Bend the rear portion of the arm as tightly as it will go, keeping the foot folded "flat". Turn the winglet on the front portion so the larger part is higher up, closer to the hip joint, and tab it into the underside of the rear portion's foot. It should fit pretty snugly.

While he can't quite hold his arms straight down, he can bend his new elbows a full 90 degrees, and rotate his hands 360. The arms are prevented from swinging away from the body at the shoulders, but they can do so at the elbows, the biggest downside to this setup. Still, he looks quite cool and can manage some neat poses w/ his arms this way. The arms themselves now have a cool, mechanical-skeleton look to them.

The two double-ended club devices combine to form 4-fingered hands, as seen on somebody's version elsewhere. They can also transform into a 4-barreled gun by twisting the central pair of fingers a quarter turn and closing them all so they're pointing straight ahead.

Since I already had 2 of his components from Energon (Sky Shadow, aka "A-10" and Windrazor, aka "angular jet"), I wanted to integrate them into the combined form. So I added an extra A-10 jet as a pair of back-mounted shoulder cannons. It's easy; starting in jet mode, all you do is fold the wings up, and position the jet engines straight up. There's a little tab on the top of the fuselage near the wings; this fits into the Energon chip socket on Superion's back; it's not a tight fit at all, it just serves as a guide. Line up the tab with the socket, and you'll see that the A-10 jet wings slide into Sups' back and wedge in next to his tail fins. You mileage may very, but mine holds on all by itself, strong enough to lift the whole robot by the new backpack.

The other jet becomes a quad-cannon attachment to the above cannon backpack, very similar to the original arm mode for that jet. Just rotate the gray combiner attachment block 90 degrees on both the Windrazor jet and the new backpack, so the holes are visible on both new jets, then just stick the top jet's block into the space for the bottom one's block. It holds perfectly!

All this is done with only a small bit of cutting: the Energon port on the backpack A-10 jet has to be trimmed down just a bit so that when the top jet comes down, the arms on that one clear the port on the A-10. If you assemble it right, you'll see where the interference is. You'll probably have to adjust the A-10 jet's engines/cannons a little to fit around the new quad-gun portion.

The result is a 7-jet combiner, with "new" arms, hands/cannons, and unique (if somewhat oversized) backpack consisting of dual large cannons and 4 smaller ones. Stability is not an issue, as the inherent ankle joint of the A-10 leg mode let's you tweak his stance perfectly.

I have to say, this has rapidly become one of my favorite TFs, the flexibility of the components is great fun, as is the challenge of improving him and his combinernessness. I hope ROTF Bruticus let's me diddle with him like this.

That sounded weird.

"He has several guns which shoot guns which also shoot tiny guns."

That's what I see when I look at that upgrade. Just looks too overpowered to me.

Diggin' it. Not sure if I like it enough to track down more Superion parts..(doesn't help I usually loose the non-A10 weapons rather quick.)

but I'm curious, what's the knee fix?

Yeah, it's a little too tall but I like my guys armed to the teeth. BTW, where's that quote from? I googled it to no avail. It's hilarious!

Someone else posted (here or on seibertron.com) about how Silverbolt has his knees on backwards, apparently it's a common factory defect. You just take the knees apart and swap the joint left to right.

:schin Interesting. Might explain why I had such a hard time getting my figures to combine. Thanks for letting me know. :thumb

as you can see, the switch makes for much more possibility.

also, while you're at it, you can also turn around the biceps to uncover another hidden detail that is a factory flub....

also, if you don't like the screws/holes being visible in combined mode, you can always switch the the black parts of the arms.

so with 7 members, including the 6 interchangeable limbs/backback, you have a total of 30 different combinations! that's not even considering the variances of how you transform the limbs either, i know of at least 3 different ways to make the arms... :eek

i'm working on my custom aerial bots, "aerion force/team aerion"(haven't picked the final name yet) and it has 12 members, 10 possible limbs and 2 leaders (hopefully if wheeljack can help me out i'll be adding the final 2 members soon). i'm not even trying to do the math on that one.

wasn't trying to thread jack, just sharing to help make this an even more awesome bot.

so when we getting those updated pics you "pinky swore" on? :P
