plastic dying

Recommended Posts

I'm actually hoping to start customing my RCMProwl.

I bought the RCMP waterslide decals and have a silverstreak alt ready (yet to take apart).

I am wondering what is the difference between air brushing and krylon fusion?

My model friends in the past told me to use air brush for say gundam and car models - I have never used this technique before.

and BodyCount recommends krylon fusion - it comes in a can? is it easier and cheaper in cost than air brush?

would air brush have a better final presentation? it SOUNDS like air brush technique would produce a thinly sprayed layer of paint - to me anything from a can of paint would produce a thick layer.

is my assumption correct than a thick layer of paint is not suitable for transforming from bot to alt mode? for fear of chipping the paint?

very longs post, but THANKS to those who reply! :D

Why Airbrushing is better

1. Thin layer of paint

2. Control on the size of the nozzle (Thick or thin line)

3. Can use any type of paint (acrylic or enamel)

4. Can create your own colors because you can mix and match paints

I used to airbrush before the thing I don't like is cleaning up :tfgrin too lazy hehe

But using Spray Can doesn't mean it will always end up with a thick layer of paint. Practice will definitely help you improve. Important thing is not to over spray. If your painting something dark with a lighter color, one trick would be to spray it with a thin layer of silver or aluminum.

In terms of cost, long term might be cheaper if you use airbrush since spray cans are more expensive than bottles of small paint.

Just my 2cents :tfgrin

Krylon Fusion is better that airbrush for one main reason. If you plan to actually tranform your kitbash, KF holds up better with less chipping and flaking. It bonds to the plastic, and therefore holds up better.

Read the instructions though. For *totally* chip proof paint, let it sit for a week.

Yup, give the paint time to really dry.

Here's my question: Once you dye the plastic, how do you keep the dye from bleeding thru your paint aps? I dyed a Gobot (Jeeper Creeper) black just to try it, and once I painted in the details, things like the yellow on the shocks turned kind of a cruddy yellow dirt color.

As to the Krylon Fusion thing, do they make it in silver? That would pretty much open the door for any color swap you wanted, since if the topcoat scratched off leaving silver, that'd just weather the paint job. Much better than painting say Alt Swipe green, and having the red show thru.

Ok, here's a good ? for ya. What Kind of dye's do you use??? I'm looking to take and dye my 20th Primes gun black and paint some silver details onto it. I went to a hobby shop and they sent me to a craft store called Michael's. the only kind of dye that I could find there was Rit dye for clothes. Thanks for the advise guys.
