Hobbying a Figure

Recommended Posts

Hey, I remember when I started getting back into collecting, there was a ton I wanted(which hasn't changed), but the options were either first release retail, rip off collector shops, or a bin of broken toys at a flea market(actualy did real good at one once).

Well, alot has changed since I started, I got alot of figures, and theres alot more ways to get them. Thank you internet! It does have a tendancy of dropping everything neatly in ones lap.

Still every now and then the hunter in me starts to itch, and I slowly piece together a figure just for the hell of it. Examples are...

Omega Supreme, I payed $395 for my first one w/ a ripped box. It's still a gem in my eye, but also a reason why I wont use collector shops anymore. About a year ago I peiced one together for $40 shipping included off the auctions and am only missing one small clip.

The first 2 seasons of Megazords are another example, a piece here, another there, for dirt cheap I have pretty much the whole set with enough extra pieces to display individual and combined modes.

Outside of complete sets, I've also doubled up the jet/shields on Overlord, got several MP Megatron KREMZEEKS, some Matrix' and so on. I can realy go on...

I never pay alot, I just pick up a peice here and there, and eventualy wind up with a complete figure or a little bit of awesome(if not more). I also rarely rush it, and let things finish in there own time to keep cost down, and realy prolong the rewards.

Well I was looking around and thinking of starting another Omega Supreme cause well, why not!?!

Also just to throw it in, I was thinking of doing this for a second loose Predaking.

I was wondering if anyone else does this, and if they have any stories they'd like to share.

Roadbuster I'm going to star once I find an unbroken body. Aparently you gotta watch the arms on him.

Thats a figure who has a lot of parts up for cheap, but never the small ones.

He's also a figure I've been pining for since the first time I ever saw him.

I will keep that in mind as I know some of those smaller parts are a B____!

Wouldn't happen to have the side gun antenna for Headmaster jr Siren would ya?

Since I got back into collecting I've never actually really thought about it. Mostly because retail stuff keeps me busy, but lately I actually have been thinking about piecing together some G1 figs. I really decided to start because of rippersnapper. He's a neat little guy and I do like him quite a bit. Looking into him I started looking into the other Terrorcons and well I like the way the others look to. So, I figured if I'm going to get rippersnapper, why not the others as well and just piece together Abominus.

Right now I'm doing this from BBTS, because I already have a pile of loot and it saves me on shipping. I have looked through a few ebay auctions, but I'm still iffy with that. Anyways right now the only thing I've gotten so far is Blot without his guns.

On a side note, what's the best way to clean these guys? I can't exactly use the same method of cleaning as I do with the used lego I buy (tossing parts into a tub with dishwashing liquid).

Diluted rubbing alchohol(it will destroy stickers) and a Q-tip.

It just dawned on me that I have some Abominus parts. Thanks cause I was gonna bid on a complete one, mine as well ad that to the compilation list.

I've got a load of stuff I keep meaning to repair but no I cant say I have done this.

I think that's how I built up most of my collection. I'd find boxes of loose or busted bots, take them home, happy as a clam, and sit there all day with my parts box and a screw driver and fix some bots. And or make customs.

I have a box somewhere of 1/2 bots, like for example a Sideswipe that's part Red Allert, part SS, just enough so it functions. Or gray and purple working Shockwaves. FUN!

Overlord ramps? I bought one boxed, I think mine is missing one of the smaller green ones. Probably take a year for me to dig it up.

Having so much TF junk and collection items, I had to try and stop buying stuff. So I got rid of a lot of my junkers.

Only one I have right now that I would love to finish is the 1/2 a Red Diaclone Skids...I need the front half of the robot/car. I have everything from the hips down. It SUCKS having 1/2 a variant! SUCKS!!!!!!

Hi, I have a almost complete Diaclone variant collections ## and 1/2 car variants...

My Prediking set was all plastic versions at one time, that I slowly pieced together and swapped out the plastic versions for the metal. It was not until I think last year I finally got the left fist for a reasonable price to complete my set (as far as I am concerned).

This seems like a nice idea, but I worry about eventually spending more than a complete toy would have cost.

I got to reading your initial post and thought it was kinda neat. I later realized I have been doing the same thing! I picked up G1 UM off ebay a few months ago before the City Commander arrived, later on I got G1 Jetfire when there was a lull in new arrivals and just in the past few days got Rail Race and Towline is on his was as well. I'm in deeper than I thought...heh heh

I will break out the paints and such from time to time and touch up/improve the bots or take them apart to do some simple maintenance if they get loose. Good times.
