For me, the character has a big part in it: Originally, when G1 prime came out, i didn't give it a second thought. But then when I saw him in the series, that made all the difference.

Yes that happens a lot. But :animated is different because we see all these episodes before the toys come out, so we (or at least me) plans out who to get. Cause I'm not one of those collectors that tries to get every last one. Such as when I got Grimlock over Lugnut. The only reason I got Grimlock is because I wanted another Dinobot instead of yet another Decepticon. That choice would mean that I picked him because of the character he was and not if he was a better toy (even though hes a MUCH better toy than Lugnut anyway :tflaugh ). But yet, a lot of times if a character you like turns out to be the worst toy in the wave, you may change your mind on getting it. So both the character and the figure itself are important but lets not forget the character makes the toy if you know what I mean.

During the drought of cartoon misery that was the Unicron Trilogy: The toy.

During Beast Wars, Beast Machines and Animated: The character makes me want the toy greatly. I find I want toys I would normally not buy just because I want a show cast.

Your straight to the point with the Unicron saga. There was so many toys coming out around the same time it was hard to keep track with the shows.

No, I think he just meant the shows were horrible. :D

Agent Zero, Greatshot, and Liege Evilmus all said things that are pretty close to how I feel about this issue.

If the character is great, I will eventually want some toy of it. On the other hand, there're all kinds of great toys of all kinds of characters (some great to someone, I'm sure). I'm just not into collecting them, or really toys in general. I'm into collecting toys of characters I cared about.

So the character. Everything else.. is just a toy.

first i look at The character and if the toy makes it look as good as The character should look then i buy it. if they toy looks bad even if it is a character i like ill pass.

mainly the toys

occasionally i'll buy because of the character (starscream is a prime example)

I voted toy. mostly because my vote ties it up. but I also tend to buy a lot of repaints, which I assign a new character. ever since I was a kid, I would mix and match toys from different lines, to create my own universe. and since a portion of my childhood was during the early ninety's, it was the main way to life out of my tfs.

and I still do it.

The character makes the toy relatable, and gives it a semblance of personality, and thats very important. Like Sylvester the Cat once said "Anythings possible in a cartoon" well actualy he held up a sign that did.

The toy though, well, they have alot more to live up to and overcome such as the ever growing QC issues in the TF lines. Beyond that, on our shelves each and every figure is begining a new path. It's origins may be based on a show, but it's livelyhood seems to become something new once out of the box as the story spreads frome page and screen to shelf.

Yep, the toy, each is a living on going episode.

I had to chime in on this again. You made such a great point here, and that last line especially.

Sometimes, the toys take on a different persona than their tv counterparts. This is perhaps less so with shows I care about, like Animated. But even then, there's strange cases.

For instance, my deluxe Bumblebee represents Bumblebee. But my activator's Bumblebee is apparently a psychopath...

I've already posted this picture, but I thought of a better caption for it. :)

I think my activators Bee overheard me talking about how the Cliffjumper repaint might replace him on display, as a crazy tough guy bot is better than a kid friendly character.

I found this picture under my pillow...

Still finding pieces of Megs in random spots. Not planning on getting the repaint now.

Thinking like that, I like him so much more. It's hard to look at him without thinking about how cute and pissed off he looks. :tflaugh
