G1 Season 1 & 2 Vs. Season 3 Characters

Recommended Posts

Cyclonus would clean the three seeker's clock in an arial dogfight any day of the week!

That would be near impossible 'cause Cyclonus=Skywarp :D

Anyway, I have to go with season 1/2 over season 3. Conceptually Season 3 had better characters, but when it came to the execution of those characters they fell short when compared to the execution of the characters from seasons 1 and 2.

Conceptually seasons 1 & 2 didn't have very many interesting characters. Soundwave and Starscream were the only ones that broke the generic bad guy/good guy mould.

With season 3 you had Rodimus Prime as the frustrated leader trying to step out of his predecessor's shadow, Kup as the grizzled war vet, and Ultra Magnus as the self-doubting warrior who's insecurities limit his potential. You also had an insane Galvatron with a loyal Cyclonus trying to hold his leader and his faction together through almost sheer force of will. Not to mention Octane the turncoat.

When it comes to conception season 3 easily beats seasons 1 and 2. In the end the vast majority of the seasons 1 and 2 cast were generic bad guys and good guys, right up to Optimus and Megs.

When it came to execution though, seasons 1 and 2 outshine season 3. Seasons 1 and 2 may have been filled with generic bad guys and good guys, but at least those simple 2-D characters were executed properly.

Yeah, Optimus Prime was the generic do-no-wrong leader with no real personality to speak of. At least they managed to pull off that generic good guy leader. On the other hand Rodimus Prime had a much more interesting character then OP, but the writers never pulled it off correctly. Instead of a young leader trying to escape the shadow of his predecessor who grows with the trials he has to face, he came across as a whinny bitch.

So Optimus Prime pulled off his simple characterization better then Rodimus Prime pulled off his more complex characterization. And the pattern we see between OP and RP can be said for much of the seasons 1/2 and 3 cast.

Seasons 1 & 2 may have had more 2D/static characters, but at least they managed to pull those characters off correctly. Season 3's "developed" characters were executed so poorly they seem weak when compared to the well executed but shallow season 1/2 characters.

Excellent analysis, Agent Zero. So, what they need to do now is a series that combines the best of BOTH. (Like Beats Wars.) I really wish they would revisit G1, and come up with a whole new line of stires, as well as revisiting the old ones. My thinking is that they could start with The War Within, then after a season or two, go to the original G1 seasons 1-2 era, then the season 3-4 era. Yes, I know the likelihood of this happening is practically nil, but I think at the very least, a LOT of folks out there would like to see a series on tv about WWI. And we all know how WWI could end: The Autobots board the ark, and The Decepticons pursue them in the Nemesis.

Wishful thinking? Yes. Impossible? No.

I agree with Agent Zero. Roddie could have be awesome but he just fell short. Ultra Magnus when I was a kid seemed a bit generic till I seen the return of optimus prime when he got infected and turned into a total bad ass. I had no problems with Springer, Wreck Gar and kup but Arcee... she was awesome in the movie but then she slowly turned into this mom character and was just meh in rebirth. blurr and wheelie I didnt care for but they never did my head in aether

I think people are looking at :animated Optimus Prime and saying "that's what G1 Rodimus Prime should have been like!"

Which is very true. Unfortunately G1 Rodimus Prime WASN'T like that. His great potential as a character just gave way to him being an angst-ridden, whining bitch.

So when comparing Rodimus Prime to Optimus Prime we have to compare what was actually executed on screen, not the conceptual aspects of the characters.

I'm 100% on board with this idea. Though I'm not sure I would do a full season or two in WWi style. That would end up satisfying the fan boys at the expense of the casual viewer. I would jump right into the present conflict and flush out the back story in flashbacks and the rare flashback episode.

Oh, and Grimlock gets to be an assault vehicle. And he doesn't have to speak like a cave idiot :D

I think Season 3 let them develop the characters a little better, since it shifted the focus to about 7 Autobots (Magnus, Rodimus, Kup, Springer, Arcee, Blurr, Perceptor), and 3 Decepticons (scourge, Galvatron, Cyclonus). Seasons 1-2 had alot more characters they tried to flesh out, but here were too many to focus on individually. Still I prefer the pre-movie characters, but the Autbotos from season 3 were cool too

Hi, yeah, emote-bombshellcopy.png would like a word with you.

Did any of you guys thought that the main characters for Season 3 like Ultra Magnus, Galvatron, Hot Rod, Kup, Arcee, Sky Lynx, Springer, Blurr, Cyclonus, Scourge, Metroplex, Trypticon and Wheelie was a good as some of the characters from season 1 and 2 not including Optimus Prime and Megatron?

Yes but they were all tarnished because I was still trying to get over my favorites being killed. Had they been worked into the series slowly before the movie I would have taken to them better. Magnus and Hot Rod kick ass regardless.

Not a chance.

Hey, I thought I've said this on old threads, but lemme repeat... Predaking was the only reason I watched season 3. :redface

While for Galvatron, Cyclonus, Scourge, Rodimus, Arcee, Magnus, Kup, Blurr, Wheelie, etc.................. still, not a chance if compared to season 1 & 2 characters.

I'll take Seekers, constructicons, reflector and Soundwave and company over any of those s3 cons....save the Predicons.

I'll take the Lambor twins, Tracks, Jazz and you can't forget teh BRAWN over any of them s3 bots...

I agree 110%. I'll also take the animation over that Akom dogsh*t any day as well.
