Blitzwing (movie/alt)

Recommended Posts

Hey

This is the guy who will stand over my alts as Alt Blitzwing. Lets just say that the binaltech project couldnt engineer a triple mode and they did a rush job on the hands (until i find some better ones). The tank turret will also soon sport a mace head to give him a bwarling weapon.

Tank mode is pretty much the same, but the blue shot is now silver on the tank

Good one. I can't wait till you show us pics of its jet mode. ;)

He can fly! Its an invisable jet mode!?! ;)

heh never realized how good that Swindle/Rollbar alt head looks as a Blitzwing head. good job!

Yeah it surprised me how well the head worked. I was gonna try modelling one then I seen this by itself and thought it was pretty similar. Amazing how many bots this head works for

Very cool choice, instead of just leaving the movie head. That really does work.

Hmm. From tank mode, swing the SAM launcher-base segments out to the sides (robot-mode) and swing the SAMS down and underso they're "hanging" from the segments. Swing out the middle tread sections 90 degrees. Flip the tank over. Pull up the robot feet. Arrange the minesweeper blades ehoritzontall, vertically, or at 45 degrees to create intakes, glide planes, aerilons or what-have-you. Swing the front tank tread sections down 90 degrees.

Add the following kitbash changes:

1) Joints or swivels to allow the middle tread sections to rotate 90 degrees forward (the G1 Seeker wings do this, but 180 degrees, when they transform). There are several options for doing this. Note that if this is accomplished by allowing the read tread sections to rotate on the sides of the robot legs, then the rear tread sections will also form G1-Blitzwing-type rear aerilons.

2) Add rear thrusters where the robot heel cylinders are. This can be done by replacing the cylinders entirely (make sure the robot can still stand upright), or adding a swivel joint and paint so that the cylinders can point rearwards and turn into the thrusters themselves. Or just swing the cylinders 90 degrees on their existing swivels and paint/add tiny micro-thruster ports in the area they were covering up.

3) Paint as needed to enhance the G1 Blitzwing look and the impression of airworthyness, given that this is basically a flying brick with wings and a forward cannon. The black (on Brawl) component which forms the part under the robot chest might make a good cockpit.

4) Ideally, some kind of front landing gear (even a spike would do) on the front of the big turret or the top of the main cannon, to allow the flight mode to land without noseplanting.

For a more movie-ish "pile of flying parts" Cybertronian look that will probably need a lot of painting to make it look viable, from tank mode, swing the minesweepers' outside edges down as far as they can go. Put the central third of the tracks in robot mode. Swing the main turret around to point backwards. Flip the tank upside down. Put the legs in a kind of Cybertron Override altmode pose, like Brawl's about to attempt the MC Hammer slide. Play around with the legs until the lower legs kind of form a vague wedge-shape over the top of the main gun barrel (heels together) and his kees stick out to the sides. Flip the front section of tank treads down 90 degrees to lie flat. Put the middle section of the tank treads back into tank mode - they will form steeply raked 'wings'. (Kind of reminds me of Cybertron Sideways.) The minesweepers form aerilons again. There's no real nosecone, just the main barrel. Fiddle about with the secondary turret and SAMs until they look good (I have the SAMs out to the sides to help fill in the general wedge-shape as seen from above). Again, you'll need to kitbash or add some kind of landing skid to stop it faceplanting on landing. Alternatively, the tank-tread wings can fold back into robot mode to form OK landing skids.

Advantages of this version: Has wings without needing extra joints; cockpit-underchest still works OK. Not too bad from side, 3/4, or front view. G1-toy-homage rear-facing cannon barrel(s). Holds together a bit better than the first version I mentioned. Can spin secondary turret to point forward. Most of the tank mode panelling is not visible, so the jet coloration can be completely different.

Disadvantages: Slightly swiss-cheesy from above (could use some panelling), bulky front half of jet, still needs a landing skid. Rocket-thruster panels on the back of the main tank turret couldn't hurt - and they could move to under the back of the turret for tank mode.

Holy shot. I get the opinion you have thought about this before? I will have to have a better look at this when I have some more time

Not really, I just happened to have a Brawl sitting on my desk when I read it, picked him up and took a bit of a look to get ideas, then tried some of them out.

I do have a bit of a weakness for designing multichangers, so figuring out how to get one altmode out of another isn't terribly difficult. I just don't generally tend to do it with pre-existing toys, as they don't usually come with the one or two extra joints or hinges (or flip-out parts) which would make the other mode(s) work, and I've yet to wield a Dremel in anger.

Plus it's a bit trickier with Movie and Alternator toys, as their close-to-real-life detailing for one mode can visually detract from another mode unless they're repainted or kitbashed a bit to have more generic-looking parts. With the Movie designs especially, the crumpled-metal robot parts aren't usually all that good at becoming part of another mode unless it's a Cybertronian one.

Thats the tricky part I guess. I really dont want to lose the realism of the alt mode, and my ability at remodelling things is questionably at best

Will require some consideration I think
