New KO's (or Chinese Reissues) confirmed for release!!

Recommended Posts

We all know how you feel about these Emerje, but the fact remains that Hasbro hasn't released a quality reissue of ANY of the G1's as far as I'm concerned. If you want to do a reissue properly, just look at MATTEL's Masters of The Universe remakes from a few years back. The packaging and figures were basically IDENTICAL to the originals, not some "Toys R Us" exclusive hash jobs in crappy flip open window boxes :tdown Why can't Hasbro follow their lead and do it right like these Chinese folks??

You can repackage a toy multiple times, change the colors, make them look like the damn cartoon or whatever and most non-collectors will snatch them up just because that's all that's sitting on the shelves. If Hasbro had any marketing sense they would take the lead on the popularity of the original line and do some REAL justice by re-releasing them in true G1 reproduction packaging.

I'm only buying memories here, not something I'm gonna actually play with or take out of the box, so I don't care if they are remakes, KO's or whatnot. If Hasbro truly cared enough about MY history with these toys, they'd quit screwing around and reissue these to look EXACTLY like the originals, right down to the boxes and artwork.

Then, Emerje, we wouldn't even be having this discussion now would we??

I don't think MOTU is a good comparison. Yeah, they looked good in package, but the figures themselves had a lot of remolded parts and weapons including several heads that became obvious when compared to the originals. In the end they sold very poorly and became clearance fodder. Hasbro's G1 reissues suffered the same fate eventually too so it's hard to say one way is superior to the other. Personally I think reissues should be about the figures, not the package, Hasbro seems to agree and even Takara really hasn't done that many figures in G1 packaging, most of their reissues came in either book packaging, the big window exclusive packaging, or re-imagined G1 packaging (Star Convoy). Really only a few Takara reissues got a total G1 treatment and they're more or less the same ones over and over again. Seeing as how these still sell out I'd say people that think G1 reissues need G1 packaging are in the minority.

I don't know what your history with these toys is, but I know my history involved clipping off the tech specs and robot points and throwing away the boxes. Boxes have never and will never be the deciding factor in my enjoyment of a toy.

I think it is a very good comparison myself. And as for the packages, that was part of the magic of original G1, going to the store and looking at the awesome packaging and then trying to decide what to get!!

Always the pessimist, aren't you?? :tftongue

As a courtesy to vintage collectors, original packaging should not be recreated exactly as it was back in the '80s. Takara/Tomy's Encore series seems to be a good compromise.

A couple of years ago, when TRU reissues were failing, I said that they should have packaged in the same way as the original toys were. Toys like Smokescreen, Grapple, etc, should have been packed horizontally and in smaller boxes. I think they would have looked a lot better.

I agree 100%. You can still have the packaging to look exactly like G1, but then have a small disclaimer somewhere on the box that states "2007 REISSUE" or something to that effect.

It was a sad sight to see the TRU reissues maxed out on clearance racks for $3 and $4. I actually bought a few, although I didn't really like them that much.

I went back to the place where my collection is and saw my Swoop, Soundwave box and Bumblebee remakes. I didn't open the Swoop box after reading so many bad reviews of it. I might trade it for an empty original box in good condition... :)

Soundwave's box is much better than Optimus and Swoop's.

Boumblebee... Meh.

I'm happy to read that Mirage is so much better! However I won't buy it as I'm looking for a Milton Bradley Mirage toy and have the box.

Now Wheeljack, Sunstreaker... Great job guys!

KOs are fine by me. I need a sludge.

Wait, how am I the pessimist, you're the one with the high expectations! :P

Yeah, what I'd like to see is something that's like the 25th Anniversary G.I. Joes: exact same vintage G1 packaging just with a "25th Anniversary" stamp on it to differentiate it.

And with a totally different figure inside it, that's what I wanted them to do with Classics, but they didn't even give us decent character art, or even fake character art like in RID.

Yeah, the Classics line was a TOTAL letdown for me. Still nice toys though, my kids love them.
