Do you support scalpers? 75 members have voted

  1. 1. Scalpers as you know are poeple who camp at retail outlets to buy stuffs that people would want in bulks, leaving the store with no or limited stocks and selling them off at a higher cost.

Well, I'm all for capitalism, but scalping of mass retail items is just a Blotty practice IMO. Totally lazy.

Scalpers suck.

TRU took action against these thieving bastards a while back when G! reissues hit & I thank them for it.

Optimus Prime/Ultra Magnus were limited to one each per seller & that's how it IMO should be.

Unless your a toy distributer/retail chain you really have no business hording toys & selling them over Ebay for an arm & a leg a piece.

Vintage items, fine, because they're no longer on shelves but stay the Powerglide out of toy isles & let collectors/kids who give a damn about the property & not just the money have a shot at them. :grr

I agree with you 100%. It's just wrong and I wish that all retail stores had a limit like this. Or at least were better about spotting these Blotty bastards.

I tell you, if I worked at Target, I'd be watching the toy aisle like a hawk for scalpers. If I spot one, I'd alert my superior and the register not to let that man check out with all those figures since he's a scalper and is being unfair to collectors and kids. The store would be a better place. Limit him to one or none.

Though as said I've seen TRU take action once the sad truth is I don't really thing most retailers care who buys what. Just as long as it's no longer on the shelf come inventory/clearance time. :redface

Goes shopping toting a baseball bat. :07evil

the thing is, how can you tell who is a scalper and who isnt? when i picked up hasbro's Marvel Legends series 2, i bought all 8 at the same time, to someone looking for scalpers, seeing me with a buggy full of figures might constitute me as a scalper. or what if i found a figure that i just wanted 2 of? or if i wanted both the regular and chrome version of the DCSH Steel figure? it really is a coin toss as to if im buying them for myself or if im buying them because i know i can get a pretty penny for them. another example, the Scarlet Spider exclusive figure from a few years back. highly sought after even now. i have 2 of them. who is to say that when i bought them that i wasnt a scalper looking to cash in rather than a so big a fan of Scarlet Spider that i even have a tattoo of him? the last time i was sure i was dealing with a scalper was when the Star Wars Ep 3 figures first came out, and it turns out he wasnt a scalper, he was just so hardcore into starwars that he was buying alot of stuff for his "troop".

so what exactly would someone look for to make sure there isnt a scalper?

Well, with things like troops for armies, that's a little different. But you usually don't see in the tv shows or movie multiple Bumblebees on the screen at any given time. So a guy who's buying say 10 Bumblebee figures...scalper IMO. He could give all sorts of reasons. If he wants 10 Bumblebees, he can't get them all at once, but at separate times. Give other people a chance to get them.

What you described when buying all 8, I'm assuming they were separate figures and not 8 of the same one. That's not scalping. That's collecting. Hell, I've gone off and bought 10 different TFs at one time. I'd look for people that are looking for multiples (more than two cause I know sometimes some people have multiple kids that have trouble sharing, or collectors like to have two of every figures (one to open and display, and one to keep MIP) of one specific figure. Buying one of both variants of a figure is also not scalping IMO.

same question

i collect in 3's in most of my figures and i collect along with my friends

and he buys two of each(which i buy for him if hes not around)

so if i walk out with 5-6 of the same figure it doesnt mean im a scalper

imo your just sol it has happens to me several times that i wlk in a store a second 2 late and i see someone with figs i want

i just suck it up and move on

none of you are mind readers so you can never tell if a person is a scalper or not just by looking at what he buys

Scalpers suck.... but you have to know where to look for certain figures... for one thing... I don't buy from TRU anymore... most of the movie figures I get from target, that's within walking distance to my house.

but what im saying is, if you have someone watching out for scalpers, how is he to know that just because they are 8 different figures doesnt mean it's still a mass purchase for scalping purposes? obviously if someone buys 10 of the same exact item, that is questionable, but what about smaller numbers? like 3 or 4? 3 of the same figure could just as well classify me as a scalper as it could a hardcore collector. Buying 5 Bumblebees could mean im fixing to hit ebay, or it could mean my nephew and cousins like transformers too. there is alot of grey area when talking about this kind of stuff, and it is real easy for a scalper to come up with a plausable excuse for buying in bulk. i think putting limits on how many people could buy would work to a degree. and then if the same guy keeps coming back and buying the max time after time they could stop him. but overall, i dont think there is any real way to stop a scalper that isnt doing it on a large scale (like they guy on ebay selling 20 alt tracks a while back), other than trying to get people to stop buying from them, which of course will never happen

*i would just like to add once again that i in no way support scalpers, i just realized i almost sound like im supportive

well, to spot a scalper it'd take more than just one visit. you'd have to notice a pattern of constant purchases of 5 or more of the same figure.

i wouldn't have a problem with scalpers if they just bought 2 or 3 to sale on ebay. it's these schmucks on ebay thats got 15 08 bb's. you know the bastard went around and bought up all the stock he could in his area. thats what gets me. i've got no problem with the guy that sees it, knows it hot, picks up 1 or 2 to make a quick buck. hell i've even thought about picking one up to keep and one to sale, that is if i could find the damned thing. you better believe that had i known alt mirage was going to be as hot as he is now i'd have bought multiples!!

as for collectors, i honestly got no problems with even getting things in triplicates, or people like TF2, what bothers me is when people buy them so other people can't have them. the ONLY reason to do that is to drive up costs, it's greedy, selfish, and Powerglideing wrong.
