Things we wish were within the TF movie

Recommended Posts

P.S. I have zero desire to see any 1986 (i.e. TF:TM and beyond) Transformers in these movies. None. The show jumped the friggin shark in 1986 and I don't need to see a live-action reminder of that. JMO

I agree with that 100% for the Autobots.

But if the sequels bring us more "essentially made-up for the movie" Decepticons like Barricade, Bonecrusher, and Blackout, then I'd have no trouble with them reusing post-86 names like Bludgeon or Dreadwind.

Just as long as they aren't Pretenders and stuff.

Bonecrusher was made up for the movie?

Nevertheless, I do agree with you.

I don't mean just the name, I mean the actual character. It was always my assumption that Movie Bonecrusher = G1 Bonecrusher, just as Movie Brawl = G1 Brawl.

I'd like to see more Megan Fox boobies

But this thread wins :tflaugh

Well, I know that all the names are reused from G1, but see, to me, most of the Decepticons (Megs and Starscream not included) appear to be completely different characters than their namesakes, not only in knee-jerk fanboy "oh my God, they changed him!" ways, but intentionally a different character.

The fact that these Decepticons had so many name changes during production (Blackout = Incinerator, Soundwave, Vortex. Frenzy = Soundwave, Soundbyte. Barricade = Brawl.) seems to support the idea that they weren't focused on adapting G1 Bonecrusher into Movie Bonecrusher but rather inventing Decepticons for the movie, and only worried about what to call them later.

Which is a way of handling the Decepticons I support 100%. Don't misconstrue this as bashing. I just don't think anyone on the production said, "Oh, we gotta put this guy in the film!"

It's odd because the autobots seem to hold to their G1 mold. as in their names live up to what we saw in the first 2 seasons, but the decepticons are all over the place

Megs seems to be based on this Energeon version, Starscream is based on everything but Energeon, Bone Crusher is a new take, Black out is based on one of the 3 Energeon characters with his name, Baricade is an old obscure name with a new persona and look. Scopry has slowly gotten dumber as history has gone on.

Really the idea of these guys being strictly based on G1, or any continuity is bunk.

and besides, I like the concept of hotshot... if not what the character has actually done.

(i always thought he was an amalgam of bumblebee and hotrod)

besides you can't really say that season 3 jumped the shark. The original series always had ridiculous plots, There's not much difference between Carnage in C-minor and the Golden Lagoon.

Besides, I think The Killing Jar may be my favorite episode.

The writers are on record stating that when they wrote these characters, they had G1 in mind.

And really, "Energon?" Who knows or cares about that stuff? The reference point here is clearly G1. That's what Transformers is.

Let's not pretend, though, that G1 Bonecrusher had much of a personality to deviate from anyway... You can talk about "what is Optimus Prime like" or "what is Megatron like" or "what is Starscream like", but so many G1 characters were secondary or even tertiary that they only possessed the barest hints of any actual characterization.

BTW all of the robots had placeholder names to keep the real cast a secret; that's where "Soundbyte" came from, for example.

Oh, but I can.... :tfgrin

I'm not talking about the individual episodes; I'll agree wholeheartedly that the show went downhill badly in season 2 prior to the introduction of the five-man combiner teams. But if you take a look at what Hasbro did in 1986 -- I mean, really look at what they did -- they totally Poochie-ized Transformers. All of the characters introduced in the movie were decked out in RAD 80'S COLORS. They completely obliterated the pre-86 cast (although they decided to keep Blaster and Perceptor around, gee thanks). It just became silly after that point. Even though the cartoon was always cheesy, having the "we're living on Earth" element helped give it some real-world resonance for the kids. ("Wow, what if there really were Transformers in real life?") But the show became detached from its roots, and lost any relevance that it ever had IMO. (It took me a long time to realize this, BTW -- for years, 1986 had always been my TF high point.)

I just realized what I was arguing about... I concede on the basis of apples and oranges... and the occasional banana.

I think that's a "Starscream, Megs and the Autobots" inclusive statement. How can you have Bonecrusher's character in mind when, as you said, he barely had any?
