[WIP] Bumble Bee Prime

Recommended Posts

LOL That's awesome! I love the back story too, I hope you do make an Alternator version one day!

He is alternator size, sheesh

He's Scout size, actually. The same company that made the small bus I'm using makes a 1:24 (maybe 1:22, but it was close) microbus, too, so I've been thinking about doing that as a future project. At the moment I'm thinking I'll make a second version of the scout-sized model, first, though. I've made a couple mods since the picture, and it'll fit together and all, but I definitely feel like I've learned a couple valuable lessons and I'm sure a second version would come out much better.

If Bumble Bee was the size of a normal alt he would be way out of scale. The Proper scale for him next to an alt is like scout or deluxe

Seeing as the G1 figures were pulled from at least three different Janapese toy lines, uniformity of scale has never been a strong point.

But OPIJ, if you meant in scale in the sense that he'd be a tiny robot, I see your point. But then his car mode would be tiny too, he'd look like a kid's peddle car! Although that could be a pretty cool little figure...

How about a pic of alt mode, and maybe an in-proccess transformation?

All in good time! At the moment I have semi-functioning legs and most of his upper torso built up. I misglued and broke off one arm but I picked up another Armorhide tonight, so I should have a functioning prototype by the end of my next work session. I hope. I'll definitely have enough progress to warrant a few more pictures, anyway.

The series played fast and loose with size, but I want to keep it real as best I can. The one I'm working on now is scout sized (although maybe a bit tall because of his long legs) and he looks pretty puny next to Hound and Sunstreaker (my only alts, currently).

Since the Alt line favors realism in the vehicles over bot modes, I'm going to make that one (if I make it at all) on a realistic alt mode scale, its effect on bot mode be damned. Anyway, I think it makes plenty of sense that Bumble Bee would be larger after taking on the Matrix and reformatting into a van; Hot Rod grew larger when he became a van, too, and a microbus is larger than a beetle.

Okay, actually, here are a few quick pics of the current state. His chest is balanced on his torso at the point where it will eventually connect and rotate from; hence the awful angle and inability to see his head.

Next to Sunstreaker, he's short.

Next to Classics BB, he's about the same size ... but probably ought to be taller, since he's Prime, now.

I couldn't get the parts to balance right, but this'll give you an idea of the alt mode. He's a shortened "chub bus" due to a flaw in my original design, but the final version will be full-length and a bit taller as a result. I also hope to improve the feet and knee joints using Lego parts.

Transformation is: arms like Armorhide. Legs and lower torso rotate out of the sun roof (which is at the bottom of bot mode upper torso) to 90 degrees, where the torso sits on top of the arms (which extend back from the cab). The thighs rotate 180 degrees back, so the knees aim at the cab, and the legs fold down at the knees to point back. The tailgate will eventually peg on to something, maybe his feet.

Awesome! I'm just loving this little guy! I love the Bee, and your idea of a BumblePrime microbus is just fantastic. I can't wait to see this done! Is the bus going to be all yellow, or white and yellow?

How'd you cut up the bus?

dremel tool?

Nothing related to the subject, but nice sig. I was sure someone would do that.

White and yellow... it'll match the one rusting to death in my parents' back yard while I can't afford to fix it.

Today I redid the chest, and it's much more solid. I built the lower body skeleton with some clearance Legos and it's just waiting for new legs before I graft it to the upper body. (I need to see how the bus shell fits to know exactly how long to make the torso.)

I'm having trouble finding the bus model I need to complete it, though. After the prototype, I've got one, and I need two to make all the parts flush. Local Walmarts are letting me down so far, but there are a couple further-out ones I haven't hit yet. I also need some Classics Seeker forearms... I've got a pair, but if I used them, my next project would be two forearms short. I plan to raid my childhood collection in a couple days so I might find what I need in there.

So if anybody has spare seeker arms or the small Maisto diecast bus to sell me, drop me a PM!
