It is one of the concerns i have about "selling" the concept to a general audience... are people going to buy these things as humanoid robots that have to transform?

I was coming at that from the other direction... like, if you were a robot, why would you need to look like a person (or whatever)? Couldn't you just be something that could fly or drive or look at stuff real close up or whatever?

Well that depends on what (if you were a sentient robot) you would want for yourself... would you want to be someone who looks up close at stuff for however long you're alive and be specifically built for that forever? I would think that anything with intelligence and sentience would want a way to be interactive with others of it's species.

further clarification: I meant that you, as a robot, could simply have that functionality, while also being able to transport yourself / interact with others in whatever way seemed best. True there would be no need for a vocal system, as all have the potential to radio what they want to say, but then again, our way of communication keeps things clear and compartmentalised.

 

What I mean by this is, if we were telepathic you'd have to filter out all the thought junk to convey your message. Vocal speach communication makes things a bit easier on specific broadcasting....ok we could go tech-nurd here and say well yes IP works by resolving host names blah blah so that the intended machine gets the info, but you get my point.
