I sometimes wonder if all of the blame heaped on Bay would have been lessened if Don Murphy hadn't originally whipped the fanboyz into a frenzy by telling them to pretty much expect a "G1" movie.

 

Would the changes have been better accepted if initially everyone was told to expect something different, but with concepts that were undenialbly "based" on G1?

Not to lock another thread, or anything, but I do think we're getting a damn G1 movie. Ops, Megs, Bumbles, Screamer, the Whitwicky family, transforming into modern cars/military vehicles,

 

But G1 means something else to other people, I guess.

Probably much less, but like Hobbes said, still some. My perception has been that Murphy is the most traditional, Bay wants what he feels is realistic and suited for his action, Bonaventura seems to have pushed for flash and the big-name voice actors, and Spielberg only wants a human story about "a boy and his car" (like he wanted Last Crusade to be about Indy and his dad). The director is typically the one with final say on creative decisions. And Bay & Bonaventura both seem concerned about avoiding any perception of "stupid, silly toy movie."

I have to think so. I loved Evolutions: HoS since it was obviously G1 designs yet pitched as "off continuity". If the concepts are undeniably based on G1, you don't need to convince anyone of it because it'll be obvious at a mere glance.

Undoubtedly, but I'm just wondering if people had been "prepped" to accept it a bit more. After all, most of the fandom seems to accept almost everyone looking completely different in each new cartoon.
