I was always wondering where Snarl was until I watched the movie again.

 

He was on Earth. Somewhere in the middle of the movie you'll find the Autobots discussing about Unicron (Right before the Decepticons lead by Galvatron attacked Autobot city) Autobots probably left him there.

we knew that, it's strange that they left snarl though and took the rest of the dinobots

Yeah yeah, this and many more animation flaws are well known amongst Transfans ever since the movie came out in 1986.

"The appearance of Snarl within the movie may be an animation error. There are five Dinobots total, but the movie only really features four of them, leaving poor Snarl (the stegosaurus) behind.

We also see his dino-head a couple of shots earlier as the camera pans to the right during the "This new menace is more dangerous than all the Decepticons together" speech. So when did Snarl arrive on Earth, and where was Swoop in this scene?

The alternated between snarl and swoop for different shots, and some shot were deleted all together... IE..Cyclonus and his Armada.. there were suppost to have be 4 cylconus clones to go along with Scourge and his sweeps.
