Michael Bay on the teaser trailer

Recommended Posts

i agree with everything LMH said up to the TF sequence.

I dont think (at least i hope not) the transformations are going to look that blocky.

?

you're talking about letters transforming into numbers

please to explain further

It just looks block and almost "grainy" and by that i dont mean the photography is hard to see -but that the transformation mechanism is really  just a bunch of tiny blocks being shifted around.

It reminds me of those little magnetic bases that have 100 tiny magnetic dimond shaped slivers on them - and you can mold them and kind of reform them into simple shapes. but there is this granual quality to it. if that makes any sense.

yes that does, but I think your comment threw me b/c I wouldn't use the word "blocky" to describe that (it made me think of G1 Scattershot or something).

If you think about it though, the type of transformation you're seeing there is the most logical choice if you don't want your movie robots to either look like toys or be morph-o-formers a la Beast Machines. It's the same idea behind every TF toy's transformation, just made much much more complex and intricate.

I do think it will also have a different overall effect when you actually see it on a Transformer, too. Hopefully it won't look like Mystique shapeshifting in the X-Men movies.

of course.

And i agree with both Hornet and LMH

but hopefully we will get some sense of a mechanical process going on here.

Nanotechnology may be the most realistic way to explain giant transforming robots - but we have yet to create a visual representation of that concept. and no T2 Liquid metal is the same thing.

"Liquid metal" was nothing more than "ooh look we can morph stuff with computers"

the concept as used in the film was utterly retarded IMO

but then I thought that whole movie should never have been made (not to derail the thread with cries of moral outrage from T2 fans or anything)

but anyway, the Mystique thing was what came to mind when you described the little magnets... it was like she would change into another person bit by bit. I think you have to strike a balance... make the moving parts too small and it *will* start to look like transforming oatmeal or something.

I allways thought the thing with them beeing on mars was that they stoped there on their way to earth. They're resting up and some decepticon sees a rover and goes "heh heh lets kick it!"

:tflaugh  I was thinking that they got there first, and Megatron was like "WE SHALL PLUNDER "MARS" AND STEAL ITS PRECIOUS RESOURCES......"

*looks around*

"uh...WE SHALL PLUNDER "EARTH" AND STEAL ITS PRECIOUS RESOURCES..."

I've shown the trailer to one of my mates who, quite frankly, couldn't give a rats-ass about TF's... and he LOVED IT!!!

His (rough) words:

This is gonna be awesome! They f***ed up Batman when they stuck Iceman and all that other cheesy crap in it. This looks d-a-r-k, in a good way!

He thought it was gonna be another animated movie at first. When I told him it was a live-action movie, he thought it would be a cheezy 80s "cartoon" with posh CGI effects. (It still may be!?) But after seeing this trailer, we may get a few more TFans on board!

I think the teaser was done like that for these reasons:

- To establish some degree of 'realism' and tone. It shows that the movie will not be a kid-targetted film and will have a mature aspect of it.

- The Transformers are presented as menacing, which is very realistic. Normally if someone sees a gigantic robot, the first reaction you'll get is soiling your pants not greeting them with open arms. To a normal human standpoint, there is no such thing as Autobot or Decepticon. And if they do, the fact alone that the TFs brought their own war to someone else's planet will see them as a destructive force regardless of their ideologies. I won't be surprised if the Autobot-Decepticon war on Earth will have any allegories to the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

- The TFs are in Mars because we commonly associate aliens with Mars, and Mars is the planet closest to Earth. It's kind of implying that the Transformers, like the film itself is coming soon.

- Frankly from what I've seen, the only people who are really Starscreaming about this are the fans, who should be thankful that a film about their franchise has finally been taken seriously and companies are actually spending a Titanic budget and have big names like Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay tied to a film based on a toy franchise. For those who don't really care about the Transformers, their first reaction is 'Wow'.
