I've never read that, but has it been confirmed by an official source that that was an official script, and if so, how out of date is it?

I think the teaser was done like that for these reasons:

- To establish some degree of 'realism' and tone. It shows that the movie will not be a kid-targetted film and will have a mature aspect of it.

- The Transformers are presented as menacing, which is very realistic. Normally if someone sees a gigantic robot, the first reaction you'll get is soiling your pants not greeting them with open arms. To a normal human standpoint, there is no such thing as Autobot or Decepticon. And if they do, the fact alone that the TFs brought their own war to someone else's planet will see them as a destructive force regardless of their ideologies. I won't be surprised if the Autobot-Decepticon war on Earth will have any allegories to the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

- The TFs are in Mars because we commonly associate aliens with Mars, and Mars is the planet closest to Earth. It's kind of implying that the Transformers, like the film itself is coming soon.

- Frankly from what I've seen, the only people who are really Starscreaming about this are the fans, who should be thankful that a film about their franchise has finally been taken seriously and companies are actually spending a Titanic budget and have big names like Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay tied to a film based on a toy franchise. For those who don't really care about the Transformers, their first reaction is 'Wow'.

Good points, each one. Plus, from what I've seen, it might actually tell the story from a new standpoint that could breathe new life into the concept.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that the movie has nothing to do with Mars rovers.  I just understand the point of introducing that concept if it's not used at all.

To me it just adds an unnecessary level of "Sci-Fi" to movie that's already about fighting robots from an alien planet.

Maybe my ability to clue into symbolism isn't as attuned as it once was.

I think you may want to look at the overall trailer and not get hung up on details.

What was it telling us? That there's alien life out there (mechanical, presumably) and it's going to be coming to Earth. More importantly, it was conveying to the audience (and also very much to the fans IMO) the much-discussed tone of the film. It was a way to say "hey we can't show you the movie yet, but this is what it will feel like". My overall impression was that it was cool though a bit overdone... but then that's how I would describe much of Bay's work.

The transforming logo was also largely there for the fans IMO, because it showed the mechanics of transformation, at least as it would be portrayed in the film.

I'm happy.

i agree with everything LMH said up to the TF sequence.

I dont think (at least i hope not) the transformations are going to look that blocky.

?

you're talking about letters transforming into numbers

please to explain further

i think that the transformations will be a bit more like BWN/RID-shellforming but with the kibble folding up into smaller forms so as to not obstruct movement.
