Beast Machines, how I love thee.

:tflaugh spoiler alert

It is a bit disheartening to see him being so cowardly because despite being a chronic complainer Rattrap was a bot you could count on in battle.

Go watch "Beast Wars Part 1" again. :tfgrin Rattrap grew a lot in that respect during Beast Wars; at first he was pretty friggin' selfish.

I never saw him as cowardly in Beast Machines, just incapable of doing what he used to do (or at least accomplishing it in the same way). I mean, he was the only guy without any weapons, and he was used to being a virtual Swiss army knife of bombs & guns & cool stuff. And then there were guys like Nightscream, who came out of nowhere and (unfairly?) got drone-destroying weapons and could transform on the first attempt. :tflaugh

Rattrap was given an interesting story arc in BM that took him to a different place than he'd been in Beast Wars (namely, feeling helpless and rejected by the people he'd slowly allowed himself to trust). Because of all this character change, it was nice to have some constancy in his character (i.e. still being the techie/hacker of the group). Nevertheless, "The Weak Component" is one of my favorite episodes of the series. The whole thing is very character-driven, but this episode particularly so.

so yeah it's cool and stuff

Heh, my Beast Machines eps are the ones taped off TV on video 6 years ago... and I have lots of eps missing (long story). So yeah, can't wait to get it on DVD.

Smokescreened: Madman Entertainment is currently releasing Beast Wars on DVD in Australia and New Zealand (Region 4, PAL) - which means Beast Machines should also be forthcoming. If you'd rather get the series in R4 PAL then you can wait.. but if you can't wait, then go ahead and order an R1 NTSC copy. Depends on how long you're willing to wait and how much you're willing to spend. I've been a BM fan ever since the show came out and I've already seen the series several times over (and still have some eps on tape) - so I can wait for the R4/PAL version to come out here rather than pay import/shipping costs for a R1/NTSC set. Especially when I still have to gradually replace my entire stolen DVD collection... (-_-)

MH - Weak Component is one of my favorites, as well... When Primal comes in and chastizes the rest of the crew at the end, even I feel ashamed :)

True indeed.

I remember the first episode of BW where Rattrap disobeys Optimus and refuses to help Cheetor.

He has matured quite a bit indeed and the same can be said for his friendship with Dinobot. The picture in my sig is still one of my all time favorites.

I too hated seing Rattrap without his weapons and gadgets, especially since the other Maximals got pretty powerful bodies. Fortunately Rattrap still had his greatest asset: his mind.

Not to mention his sense of humor.  :tflaugh

And yes, the Weak Component is a great story.

The artsy side of me gets wood when I watch that b/c of how the "confrontation" scene was lit -- they're all in silhouette against a red background. How often do you see artistic considerations like that in a cartoon? (I similarly loved the scene in "Fallout" where the camera pans over all the deactivated Vehicons and it's just silence. Friggin brilliant.)

YES :clap

I'm alright with waiting if I have to, if it means it's got anything improved over the NTSC release, then the wait is worth it.  Even though I did honestly find the G1 cartoon to be dull, maybe when I've rejoined the Amazon DVD rental plan, I'll pick some more DVDs and try to get a new DVD player.

It's annoying how so few TF DVDs have been released here, even with G1 being a tad dull, it's still better than most of the things that's on TV these days.

I really want to buy the set, but the $60 tag + the fact I already have them on cd makes me say "I can wait another week."
