The gerwalk mode basically (in my opinion) just gives the toy a little more play value. Third modes are always fun, and one that is 1/2 bot 1/2 jet is pretty freaking cool.

On topic a little more, I kinda remember the episode the way that Rawhide described it. I think that Jetfire was just trying to land in bot mode and was transitioning through gerwalk to get there. Either way, it is kinda cool to see on screen.

The gerwalk mode is there because the toy is originally a Macross Valkyrie. In Macross the gerwalk mode is part of the design and has plenty of screen time.

If I recall correctly, in that episode, Skyfire actually uses his gerwalk mode as an actual mode. He uses it to make a landing, and then is still in gerwalk mode when he unloads the other Autobots. It's not until his passengers have disembarked that he then transforms to robot mode, so the episode doe portray it as an actual functional mode rather than just being in mid-transformation.

Jetfire officially does not have the gerwalk mode, as it is not shown in his instructions - but as Michael_Dracon said, being based on the Macross Valkyrie (VF-1S to be exact), the toy is certainly capable of transforming into Gerwalk mode (as shown in the photo in my previous post).

I believe this episode is the only time Skyfire/Jetfire has ever used the Gerwalk mode in official continuity. He never used it in the comics, although in the comics there were times when Jetfire's robot arms were deployed in fighter mode, but it's not a Gerwalk mode. Unlike the Gerwalk mode, the arms come from underneath, not the sides, and the legs do not deploy. Jetfire only did this when he was a mindless (and lifeless) Decepticon automaton. I don't remember him ever using this "mode" again after he was given life as an Autobot.

Methinks Goki has the right of it.

But Skywarp has taken Gerwalk mode before... and even detransformed one arm to throw something in the comics.

How weird is that? A jet, with an arm sticking up out of it...

Thanks, but I was aware of that. My original comment still stands, it is another cool mode for the figure.

Then again, I can also remember seeing one of the seekers (Starscream, I think) in a similar mode. If I recall correctly, that seeker was in a fight and transformed with his main body still a jet, but the aft part of the jet transformed to legs. He used it to give extra downwards thrust and as soon as he was in control again, went back to complete altmode.

A similar situation, yet the seekers officially don't have gerwalk mode.

(Not saying cartoon Skyfire doesn't have one, just that other jets have shown similar modes but don't have the ability as toy.)

That was skywarp, Rawhide, as I said above. :)

He also did that funky "only transform an arm" bit in the comics that looked ultra-weird.

Remember the comic one with clarity, but the cartoon is always a bit foggy for me -- especially after a long day at work and with too much food in my stomach :D (But I'll take your word for it that it was Skywarp :thumb )
