Testor's paint

Recommended Posts

I want to repaint my Alt Skids as Ironhide and get a second Skids to keep as is.

My problem is my red paint is extremly thick.  What would be a good method to make it a little more loose and liquidy so I can apply it neatly?

I had contemplated adding a little water.  I mean, the stuff is kept with the cap on and it's still somewhat full.

Use a little bit of paint thinner.  You can add it straight into the bottle, with plenty of mixing, but make sure to do it just a little bit at a time.

Wait a tick...Your using Testors paint in a bottle?

I would strongly suggest using a spray can.  Hand brushing that much surface area could be a big pain.

If it's enamel paint, I think you can cut it with paint thinner without a problem.  If it acrylic, you can use water.

If you do paint the whole thing by hand, alternating the direction of brush strokes will help eliminate brush marks.

Hope this helps.

Isn't it easier to paint by brush since the spray goes all over the place?

I don't think so.  In fact, you want it to go all over the place for an even coat.

If your worried about overspray.  Make sure you have everything you don't want to get paint on masked off.  Also, get a big carboard box, cut down 2 sides and open the flap down. It makes a nice paint booth for painting outside.

I've done all my painting by hand so far because brushing requires less area to work on and less ventilation.  Since I do my work on my bedroom floor, that's a plus.

But I'm going to try spray for the first time, because I have to.  Some colors only come in a can.

If you want the best results you might want to consider and air-brish.....you can avoid the the thick coats and still get an even paint job !!

i'm not a painter at all, most of the models i've painted come out mediocre at best, i always paint by hand because everytime i try spray painting i get a bunch of little teeny tiny bubbles in the paint...  :redface

I'd swear by the hand painting technique myself. No brush strokes here. But I also use Tamiya Acrylics to hand brush.
