I'll take that with a grain of salt all of the Botconers who saw the BW prototypes claimed how great they were, with nary a mention of EXTREEM. :tftongue

By the way, I'm not being argumentative, just joking around - besides EXTREEM is just the current styling aesthetic, look at those GI JOE SIGMA 6 figures - which pretty much feeds back to what you said about the final result is never as good as one's imagination colors it to be.

I think word of Botconners has been blown out of proportion by others.... how "great" did Botconners say they were and how much did their words get inflated and misquoted? Aren't the BW guys "great"? They're not "GOD-LIKE" but did any botconners say that exactly?

Probably no one used the word "EXTREEM", since who knows what that "word" means?? But stylization such as Megatron's "half-starved" T-rex look were definitely mentioned.

I don't remember who, but there was someone that went to Botcon who used the exact term "god-like" to describe Primal and Megs.

As I recall, the Botconners thought they looked really good, I don't recall any dissenting voices - who seem to be the majority opinion now (or the squeakiest wheel).

"EXTREEM" is somewhat of a TFans term to jokingly describe how the designers incorporate popular design aesthetics of the day into the toys:  for G2, EXTREEM meant excessive use of day-glo colors - for more modern toys it generally means the toy has an "anime-inspired" design (such as the aforementioned GI JOE SIMGA 6 figures).

For the record, I actually like the new BW guys and plan on getting them - EXTREEM doesn't bother me at all.

gimmics subtract from toys. if it must have a missle what's wrong with a simple push button to activate

yup

more to the point, there was nobody who came back from Botcon saying "wow those figures are totally different from what everyone will be expecting"

As I recall, the overall impression that was given was that they were "better" versions of their Robotmaster counterparts, but with key-gimmicks.  The only grumbling was related to the key-gimmicks.

Then you obviously didn't read carefully enough.  Long before the public pictures (or even the Collector's Club pics) surfaced, I had already known from the BotCon posts that they wouldn't be cartoon-accurate, with many people citing King Kong and the V-Rex from the new Kong movie as general guidelines as to how the figures would be stylized, beast-mode wise.  They were described as being edgier redesigns of the original characters, and even Primal's inverted transformation was noted in the BotCon coverage if you dug around enough.

Which is ironic, since in Primal's case at least, the key gimmick isn't even on the figure itself.

I would have thought something as significant as "these BW reissues are total reimaginings of the characters" would have warranted more visible mention.

I remember seeing the posts regarding Primal's BM-like transformation, but I don't think the degree of "edgyness" was communicated very well.  Otherwise we'd have probalby had this conversation six months ago...  :tflaugh

(The King Kong comments I don't remember at all, but maybe for me they were useless comparissons since at the time as that movie was barely on my pop-culture radar.)

Everything *I* said and everything I read mentioned they were somewhat "reimagined". If it was not more visible to someone I tend to believe it's due to people hearing/seeing/reading what they want to believe instead of what's actually there.

As for Primal's gimmick being on his accessory.... the toy has a key gimmick... as reported by botconners, as said by Archer, there was no mention it WASN'T just an accessory. The pictures didn't show anything specific about the key features. It was only something said, with no specification.

1 person says "god-like" every else says "really cool".... the ONE "god-like" mention being fixated on is what I mean by blowing things out of proportion.

Also I wasn't asking for a definition of "EXTREEM", I think I understand what is meant by that, but the point is, people were not using that term, so it shouldn't be surprising it wasn't used... it's an ad-hoc, vague description. There were descriptions of stylization and "re-imagining". I would count that as describing the "EXTREEM" nature even if they didn't use the letters "E-X-T-R-E-E-M"

The figures are totally different from what was expected.... um... there's just about no one they couldn't be totally different unless pictures were publicly released at the time... because you know the human mind has a lot of imagination and X-many different minds will all have rather different expectations. Especially on something hard to descirbe like these beasts.

The seeker vehicle mode on the other hand is easy to describe, remember, and shouldn't lead to strange expectations.... it is very, very, very, close (perhaps one might say "EXTREEMLY" close) to a model-accurate F-15.

words....

all I know is that my first reaction upon seeing Primal was "OMFG WHAT IS THAT"

I would have communicated that sentiment if I'd been at Botcon JMO
