Murphy: Execs Believe Old Voices Tie To Old Times

Recommended Posts

Isn't that what nostalgia is all about?

This isn't BotCon we're talking about... I can understand why they feel that way.

If using Cullen and Welker is going to compromise the director's vision, then so be it. I don't have a problem with it.

But the director is MICHAEL BAY.

Well that's another issue...

But you know, you gotta think -- what are they trying to accomplish with this movie (franchise)? They want something that is going to be fresh and relevant and new and all of that stuff. I do agree that for a lot of people in their 20's - 30's, these voices would create a powerful link to the 1980's cartoon. Whether or not that's a good thing depends upon your perspective. Clearly Dreamworks' concern is that it may not be a good thing. The last thing you want with a fanboy franchise film is for it to come off as a fanboy franchise film. It's got to feel accessible to people who haven't spent the last 20 years dreaming of the moment when they would make a live-action Transformers movie.

And FYI that's most people. :P My sister is still in amused disbelief that they're actually making a movie out of the Transformers.

So does she know there was already a Transformers movie?

So am I to be quite honest.

But really, the voices aren't the important part right now anyway.  The script should be the focus first.  After that they can go after whoever they want for the voices.  Cullen & Welker, Kaye & Chalk, Cheech & Chong ... whoever.

Yes of course..... she is *my* sister, after all.

Though if you were around at the time the movie came out, you wouldn't really be comparing it to a "real" movie such as is hopefully being made now. TF:TM had a very limited run in the theaters and didn't do very well financially (read: they lost money on it). It was hardly a blip on the radar at the time, and was only significant to fans of the cartoon/toys.

If they are gonna use TF voice actors, I think it would make more sense to to use their current voices. I love Kaye voice personally *walks around the house imitating him every day*. If they want to use new voices, I completely understand.

I'm doubtful that they would want to go that route either. Kaye and Chalk are the voices they use for the kids' cartoon. I don't know if they want that association either.

But if they use celeb voices, it'll be considered a sell-out, and for the most part I HATE celebrity voices being used for animated characters (with the exception of most Pixar films). I feel it's a cop-out and they're selling the flick on the star power, not ther animated character. What sucks is they're in limbo with who to use, they want to attract new fans without alienating old ones. I say get unknowns or people who work in the anime voice industry to do the voices. And if nothing else, the guy who plays Starscream/Cobra Commander currently really should be 'Screamer's voice, I don't think ANYONE else right now could do him justice. I bet Kaye and Chalk will be signed on for the movie tie-in cartoon though...

seriously though, this doesn't surprise me, even if I disagree with it. I tihnk Kaye could do a better G1 megatron(In terms of matching his personality, not an impression of Welker) than Welker anyway.

oh hell no, David Kaye's BW Megatron voice is completely unsuitable for a Megatron that is the leader of the entire decepticon forces as opposed to a common criminal. since the Megatron for the new movie will probably be a homage to G1 Megs, it would be more appropriate for him to sound like a sinister military commander as opposed to a common mob boss.

and no, i don't care about getting Cullen and Welker, i just want Megatron's voice to match his personality.

I think people throw around the term "sellout" a lot without really thinking about what they're saying. Is the Transformers franchise currently a bastion of artistic integrity? PUHLEEZE. Take a look at Transformers: The Movie. What is that if not a market-driven "sellout" full of gratuitous "celebrity voices"? And yet fanboys drool over that movie to this day.

Let's just get over ourselves a bit, and remember that we're friggin' lucky this thing is (possibly) being made at all.

am i the ONLY one who thinks peter stormare could possibly have what it takes to voice megatron in the movie?

for those who don't know stormare did the voice of dracula in last years direct to video movie batman vs dracula. for anyone who's heard him voice dracula in that movie trust me the guy has got THE voice for  g1 live action movie megatron.
