Murphy: Execs Believe Old Voices Tie To Old Times

Recommended Posts

Wouldn't "old voice actors mean old times" only be known to us?   I mean, why not use at least some of the old voice actors and satisfy the fans?  Everyone else wouldn't who they are anyway.  Doesn't that then work for everyone?

I think Hollywood suits will always prefer promoting something that states:  "Featuring the voice of Tom Hanks as Optimus Prime!" or some such, to "Featuring the voice of some old guy whom you've never heard of before."

I would hope that saving money would trump that kind of thinking.

I think that "saving money" and "summer blockbuster" are mutually exclusive terms.

In a film, your actors are an investment. I can see the point about "who cares who the voice actors are, so you may as well please the fans if you can", but I can also understand the desire on the part of some to distance this movie from the 1980's cartoon.

Indeed, one fan's beloved childhood favorite is another man's cheezy 80s crap.

I'm thinking that getting people excited about this movie rather than laughing about it is going to be a bit of a trick.

really, people, this *is* the Transformers...

I'd sooner expect people to scoff than laugh.  More an issue of whether it's taken seriously or not.

I think it's more likely that a big name actor would be taken less seriously for doing the film than a film being taken more seriously because of it.  A-film actors selling movies has some grain of truth to it, but I think it's a bit more complicated than that and presuming that execs will resort to such a simplistic mode of thinking is premature.  It may end up happening of course though preferably as new characters like in the first movie -- a lot of the new char's voices were fairly known names at the time and, as mentioned in reviews, were at the height of their popularity -- or replacements for VAs who've passed on.

uh okay whatever

How would making humans the highlight chars necessarily achieve that?  It's not like moviegoers are gonna see title "Transformers" that they aren't familiar with, ask the basic plot outline, and go, "Oh boy.. I sure hope the humans in this really kick ass because we are the best!"

you just discribed the japanese metality towards giant robots.

Oh well, what's the point in worrying about voice actors.  Michael Bay is directing the movie, so it's already doomed.

:tflaugh there is that to think about

Although I never did see "The Island"..... what was the verdict on that one?
