Why did Universe & RM Fail

Recommended Posts

Robot Masters was an ok line. I mean at those import prices many people do not want to buy too much. I bought Optimus Prime and Starscream and loved both. Beast Convoy is neat but Lio Convoy and Psycho Orb are bad.

Universe had a few cool molds but most of the molds chosen were too recent and to top it off the colors were bad. Optimus Primal, RazorClaw and Depthcharge were all winners in my book.

But many other figures really lacked, especially in the color department. It was not untill later that they began releasing better figures, especially the Micromasters which were my favorites. I hope Superion will still be released allthough fortunately I allready own Sixwing.  :tfgrin

Blast Charge is also an example of a figure done right. If only they had more of those from the start, it would have been a much more successful line. Heck, had they released all of the Japanese Beast Wars figures the line would have been a huge hit.

Universe had a great potential that I don't think was ever fully exploited. By producing some of the G1 or G2 bots with different paint jobs, they could have supplied new guys with the older molds they've been looking for, brand new, without decreasing the value of the originals for collectors. They did it to some extent, but not nearly enough.

Robot Masters, I don't think we've seen the end of it. They just need to work on their marketing strategy, and supplying the US might not be a bad idea.

First things first, though. Hasbro needs to get some shelf space in the US. I'm sick and tired of seeing an enormous section for "The Batman" "Batman Begins" "Star Wars" and "Power Rangers", and seeing 2 collumns for TFs, with maybe some shelf space for the Voyagers and Ultras. It's just irritating.

:pfx

When I walk into the local Bart Smit, I see tons of Action Man Atom but barely any Transformers. They had a few basics and deluxes (most of which I snagged up immediately) and even Vector Prime which I finally bought as well.

Nowadays nothing. And a whole friggin shelf for Action Man Atom. Transformers pwns that Action Man Blot. They just need to lower prices. I mean 15 Euro for a deluxe is a tad much. And advertise better.

Europe is still getting Action Man?  the Mainframe cartoon?  I liked that show. :redface

I don't remember Action Man, but here we get shelves and shelves for "The Batman", "Batman Begins" and "Battle B-Daman".  There's a very small section for TFs (other than at Toys R Us', where they have practially half an aisle for TFs).

15 Euros for a Deluxe?  Wow.  That's expensive.  Deluxes are $15CDN (10EUR), but I picked most of my Deluxes for about $10CDN (7EUR?), and over 95% of my Cybertron collection were bought at special/sale/discount/pricematched/mislabeled prices.  :P

When I went into Target this morning, I was depressed to see almost all of Cybertron's space taken up by about 20 of the Sigma 6 roleplaying guns.  There was about 6 inches per shelf for Cybertron.  I go to Walmart, Star Wars appears to be eating Cybertron's space to nothing.  Cybertron is obviously selling since the areas are almost empty, but they are sqeezing it into nothing.   At least they still have a whole display section at TRU.

And to take the subject back to the original topic, RM was expensive to us because it was all imported, but overall it seemed like the line just wound down like any line consisting of mostly repaints would.  Universe, on the other hand, had too many crazy streaky repaints and several horrible choices of molds like King Atlas and Soundwave.  Old barely articulated molds like that just aren't going to do well with poseable Energon toys sitting right next to them.  Then there was the fact that they charged $20 for a basic and a deluxe, with maybe a minicon thrown in, which I've seen many people call a ripoff, but was ok by me.

Then, finally, there was no fiction for the series, so kids didn't want them as much.  The usually bad repaints of fairly recently released toys probably killed alot of collectors, besides completists, from buying them.

Edit:  Typos

Speaking of micromaster superion when was he supposed to come out anyway?  I heard an annoucement about him so long ago then he just disappeared.  Same with the RID Devastator Constructicons?  I've been out of the loop lately but those two i was actually looking forward too and now this.

no ATOM is part of the action man line here

i can realy complaine about shelf space back here when energon was selling during the summer TRU had a whole area just for TF's and my local toy store has an entire end just for TF's granted thier all energon over stock on sale

the only bad this in the UK is the rather sketchy distrobution some areas get toys the other will never see and the fact we are only getting cybtron now seeing as its at its end in japan is just ghey
