hopelessly dependant on the past?

as far as new leaders go look were its gotten them in the past. rodimus. i loved him but im apparently the only one.

You're not the only, shajaki, trust me. ^_^ Rodimus is certainly my favourite character. Seeing him return as a strong character in Super Link was great, IMHO, enough to wash the bad taste of the late US TF cartoons away after all these years. I now feel that they've at last done him justice and can leave him alone.

though I should also point out that I think 3000 was dead on the money about the main goal of the TF franchise being to make money...all anime aimed at the certain age group that TF targets as a primary audience has the goal of selling toys and that's not always a bad thing, IMHO.

I'm not actually going to disagree here.

The comments in other threads that started this off were some people  talking about wanting to see a full set of G1 seeker characters in Galaxy Force style and similar, if I'm not mistaken.

It wasn't bashing other continuities or anything, it was only that.

Now, as you and others have stated, and I too have aknowledged, every Transformers line was made to sell toys.

And it was people wanting to see things in a show that exists soley to make money.

I enjoy the other series, I own a few of the toys; GF Vector Prime & Hybrid Galaxy Convoy are right up there with MP Prime as far as prides of my collection.

But I don't understand people moaning about G1 nods as if it somehow undermines the credibility of the latest half hour commercial.

So maybe instead of this thread questioning if G1 fans are too dependent on G1, perhaps it would have been more relevent to what sparked this all to ask if fans of other continuities aren't taking them all a little too seriously.

Among all the merchandise animes (animes specifically devised to sell toys), I felt the Transformers franchise has probably the more decent presentations among them. A lot of fans whined that the Armada series was a Pokemon rip-off, but that's too much of an exaggeration. At least we didn't have a story involving kids controlling robots and fighting in tournaments every damn episode like the rest of this kind of anime (Crush Gear, Beyblade, Battle B-Daman, Yu-Gi-Oh and all similar crap).

I like a good balance between homages and creativeness. I think Cybertron was able to nail it, although they had fewer homages, since Energon practically did almost everyone already. But in essence, Cybertron was able to make nods to all TF franchises. Every person who were into realistic earth modes, beasts and futuristic vehicles had their share of toys from Cybertron. We even get to have the first Primus toy which is really awesome.

My biggest beef with the fandom, is people who can't get past G1 and does not collect anything or even remotely currently collecting G1 constantly Starscreaming about the changes made throughout 20 years of the TF franchise. Some of these fans take G1 so seriously making it look like the new TFs are bastardizing the franchise, as if G1 was the Holy Grail. I mean get a grip, the Transformers franchise was made in 1984 to make money, and the same thing applies today.

G1 was not perfect by an stretch of the imagination, but those seris that followed each had something to offer that proved certain aspects of the TF universe could be improved, and in some ways the stakes of a shows story could be raised.

Beast wars: although you will never get fans to agree about the style of animation used, most of the people you ask will tell you that its story was great on the whole and all the characters got the attention they deserved.

Also unlike many of the characters, even compared with today's cartoons, were given constant personalities rather than ones that seemed to change faster than you changed underware.

Alltanators: (s.p) this seris showed that alt-modes could be used to sell the toys, even without the added incentive of the robot within.

Armarda: this seris showed that well made toys could be made to be almost identical to their on screen characters.

G1: proved the idea of transformers could fly, and provided the character types used in most transformer shows (optimus etc)

I agree with Optimus 3000 that any new seris requires to make the characters realistic. I would like to expand on that.

1. If you want to have a leader who kills traitors, you will have to make sure those main 'trouble makers' have good ways to avoid his wraith. Beast wars did this well Quickstrike would have been exacuted if the Vok controlled tigerhawk hadn't showed up. we need more like this. and when a traitor does get caught he should be dealt with properly, G1 did this well 'die starscream die!!'

2. simular to above, if you want to create a feeling that the characters know how to fight etc you need to improve the characters.

An example is crowd favourite Starscream. the origanal idea of his character was a Decepticon with skill and smart enough to make him a threat to the autobots and Megatron's throne however in the G1 cartoon he was used for comic relief.

However sometimes the character he 'should' be shires through: in the episode 'the core' Starscream warns megatron several times that his plan proves too risky and it does not work, and you would have thought these would have been brownie points for him. he needs better design on him.

can't think of more right now

On more recent IDW update news:

I like updates but not at the expense of ruining a well known aesthetic compromised. Yeah. EJ Su has me all in a huff. Though I'll still buy the comic. I can't accept this as "new", it's not new. It's Gundam. I like the odd homage thrown in here and there but not anime-ize the entire franchise.

But then again, I'm a hypocrite because I love GI Joe Sigma 6 for the anime look. :redface But the vehicles are unmistakably Joe.

I guess I'm more passionate about G1 since I grew up with it. Damn I miss Don's style of updating the classic look. Right now this is all I see:

Not stuck in the past, but if you're going to have the universe you're depicting actually be the classic characters. I want it done right.

Armarda: this seris showed that well made toys could be made to be almost identical to their on screen characters.

*Looks at Amarda Prime*

*Laughs*

G1: proved the idea of transformers could fly, and provided the character types used in most transformer shows (optimus etc)

Characters I'lll agree with but only the G1 cartoon had so many flying Transformers, in the comics many could not, just the planes and Shockwave.

i enjoy the story....im not tied into which series is better but i do know they need to start cleaning up after themselves...watching energon and seeing that series go superlink with everyone and then shuffling over to cybertron where kitty claw mode is unheard of... and megatron happens to be wearing unicrons shoulders...but everyones confused...why not keep the same characters and just move them up like hot shot going from a car to his SUV mode

That's not what he meant. He meant that the show proved the concept of Transforming robots would be accepted by the public, not they the bots themselves could "fly."

As for that, there are several episodes in which the "flightless" Autobots fly. The first episodes for one. How else did they get to the Oil Rig to save the Witwickys?

That's not what he meant. He meant that the show proved the concept of Transforming robots would be accepted by the public, not they the bots themselves could "fly."

Eh, my bad. Language barriers, what can you do?

PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS!!!!

Hehe, nah, I'm just kiddin'! Seriously, you've made some very well-formed posts just in this thread. You can be forgiven a simple mistake, since you're clearly not an idiot. If you WERE an idiot, however. . .  :punch
