Ok I'm going to say it (and should be shot for it too) but WTF is a MEGATRON?

Please tell me there is a definition of this word somewhere? Is it like a really highly charged particle (mega electron), which would make sense.

Now Shockwave, there's a name I 'get' like "oh crap get out the way"....but Megatron??!

I'm not sure, but I remember reading an interview with Bob Budianski (who came up with many of the original names & techspecs) where he gave an explanation. It came down to something like this (if I remember correctly).

Tron is short for electronics, while Mega means something like: huge, large. Also, the entire name rang close to Megaton, which was associated (in the 80's) with nuclear weapons and therefor somewhat scary.

But indeed, considering that many of the original group of TF's had great names that perfectly describe either there altmodes, abilities and/or characters, Megatron is a bit weird.

OK here are some more. In Japan, the Combaticon Blast Off was called "Brest Off"

Also, Japanese Micron called Crack.

As far as WTF names, the winner of that trophy is the Italian TFs. They are almost bootleg style names. In fact, one year they decided to have all the toys be named ____bot, so there was Scoutbot, Iperbot, etc.

Wideload is still my favorite. Reminds me of that Family Guy episode.

Other weird names:

Salt Man X and Salt Man Z

Tigre (Italian name for Jazz, which translates to Tiger  :wtf  )

Sheriff (Italian name for Scourge)

Gong (Japanese name for Brawn)

Drag (Japanese name for Huffer)

Drag Strip/e

Hardspark/Hotspark/Wildspark (Japanese for Guzzle, Sizzle and Fizzle) ... Hard, Hot and Wild. ooo boy

can't forget Gaihawk/Gayhawk

Rabbicrator  :wtf

That's it for now.

Just a few to add to the list right now.

Hosehead- I don't think I need to explain.

Grindor- Sounds like a lap dance specialist.

Hotspot- Again, self explanatory.

Misfire- Sounds like he suffers from premature eja.....well.....you know!

Strongarm- Gee...what do you think he was doing to get that arm so strong?  :tfhuh

ramjet...rapid run..squeezplay...weird wolf was WTF to me

GUTCRUNCHER

Gee, nobody noticed the best one:

Black Heat (the name of a Japanese repaint of Blackjack, the micromaster)

Bonecrusher: A definate passion-killer!

(Go-Bot) Buzzer-Bot: Kids + butt-plugs are just WRONG!

Dirtbag: A common UK term for a girl who's had more pricks than a second-hand dartboard.

(Go-Bot) Flash-Bot: A full moon tonight?

Longhorn: Fnar fnar!!!

I know this one speaks for himself, but Gas Skunk

Raindance...hes a cassette not a native american

Has anyone mentioned the Headmaster group yet?
